ACSD schools ratify two-year teacher contract, but a financial penalty looms

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central School District (ACSD) board and local teachers have ratified a new, two-year labor agreement that includes a 3-percent annual increase in new money for salaries, extends the length of the school day, and requires educators to take on a greater share of their health insurance premiums.

But some ACSD negotiators are now wishing they had waited a little longer before finalizing the new pact.

Middlebury summer to feature movies and music in the park

MIDDLEBURY — For the second consecutive year, the Better Middlebury Partnership (BMP) has teamed up with the Middlebury Community Music Center to host a summer music series on Wednesday nights in downtown Middlebury. In addition to the concerts that have been offered in the past, the free event series, now called Midd Summer Music & Movies, will include four outdoor film screenings.

Sheldon Pops concert to rock the skies on Thursday

The family-favorite 25th Annual Henry Sheldon Museum Pops Concert and Fireworks Display will be staged this Thursday, June 29, on the spacious, manicured grounds of the Middlebury College athletic fields, nestled between and with views of the Adirondack and Green Mountains.

Middlebury officials eyeing $1.15M Creek Road rebuild

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury should work to reopen flood-damaged Creek Road as soon as possible, and then phase in a series of more than $1 million in upgrades to the road, which has been closed to through-traffic for the past two years.

That’s the course the Middlebury Infrastructure Committee on June 22 voted unanimously to ask the selectboard to pursue.

Local Lions distribute donated eyeglasses

VERGENNES — From July 2016 to June 2017 Vermont Lions Club members have been quietly collecting eyeglasses from the public and stashing them away in the basement of Vergennes Lion Brad Howe, the chairmen of the effort. 

On June 14, under Howe’s direction, members of the Vermont clubs delivered about 15,000 pairs of eyeglasses to the New Jersey Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center (LERC) in West Trenton, N.J. More than 3,000 of those glasses were from the Lions Club donation boxes in Brandon, Middlebury and Vergennes.

International Co-op Day set for July 1

MIDDLEBURY — On July 1, Middlebury Natural Foods Co-op will join co-ops around the world in celebrating International Co-op Day. The United Nations and the International Co-operative Alliance have commemorated this day annually since 1923.

This year, at a time of increasing economic inequality, co-ops and credit unions are highlighting how their businesses can offer a solution by contributing to economic inclusion and building community wealth.

ACSD board balks at moving sixth grade to middle school

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central School District board on Monday decided it will not move 6th grade instruction into Middlebury Union Middle School beginning next fall.

A majority of the panel agreed with Superintendent Peter Burrows’ opinion that such a move would be imprudent at a time when the ACSD is still adjusting to the major changes of consolidated governance and the transition to an International Baccalaureate Program.

MUHS alum's new company uses 3-D technology to preserve healthy ears

MIDDLEBURY — Your ears are as distinctive as your fingerprints: That’s the essence of Murmur, a new Silicon Valley company founded by Cornwall native Jordan Sax.

Using three-dimensional scanners, that consist of lasers and cameras, and 3-D printers, Murmur creates custom hearing-protection products that contour to the exact shape of individual ear canals.

MIDDLEBURY — Three short years ago, Middlebury Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7823 appeared to be on its last legs. The organization was facing a $30,000 budget shortfall, dwindling membership and other challenges that prompted post leaders to consider selling their headquarters and event hall at 530 Exchange St.

That was then.
