Robin Shalline says goodbye to Beeman 'family' after 36 years

NEW HAVEN — On June 15, as Beeman Elementary kids unwrap their last-day-of-school popsicles and scatter for the summer, longtime teacher Robin Shalline will join her colleagues on the front steps of the New Haven school and wave goodbye to her students for the very last time.

After teaching for 36 years at Beeman, Shalline is retiring.

Through it all, she’s never forgotten what it’s like to be a little kid.

Ralston considers Senate bid as independent

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Coffee Company founder and CEO Paul Ralston of New Haven will likely run as an independent for the state Senate, should he decide to officially enter the race.

The former Middlebury state representative, who now lives in New Haven, continues to weigh the pros and cons of committing to a run for one of the two Senate seats representing Addison County, Huntington and Buel’s Gore. Incumbent Sen. Chris Bray, D-New Haven, Middlebury Democrat Ruth Hardy and Addison Republican Peter Briggs are already confirmed candidates.

Beeman Elementary looks locally for new principal

NEW HAVEN — Travis Park’s commute from his home in Bristol is about to get a little shorter.

Since 2016 Park has served as principal of Addison Central School. On July 1 he’ll report to Beeman Elementary School in New Haven, where he will replace outgoing Principal Kristine Evarts, who has accepted the position of special education coordinator at Otter Valley Union Middle/High School.

Lydia Pitts honored in Congressional Art Competition

MONTPELIER — Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., recently announced the winner of the 37th Annual Congressional Art Competition at the Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier. Aidan Bundock of Shelburne and Champlain Valley Union High School won first-place honors for his watercolor painting, “Midnight Snacks.” Bundock’s piece was selected from a field of 169 student entries representing 39 high schools across Vermont.

Wind down on Fridays with summer concerts

For the past seven years Lincoln Peak Vineyards has offered a great way to begin the weekend: a relatively informal Friday evening concert that is played outside close to the vines that grow the grapes that make the winery’s excellent beverage. The vineyard will kick off its 8th season of community concerts this Friday with a performance by a local group of musicians known as Gumbo Ya Ya.

Field Days to honor its former president with new Foster welcome center

NEW HAVEN — Addison County Fair and Field Days will honor and remember the president of its board of directors who was killed in a farm accident last fall by building a new welcome center on the New Haven fairgrounds that James H. Foster Jr. had imagined.

“This was Jim’s vision,” said Benj Deppman, vice president of the Field Days board of directors.

The board had long been working on creating a new ticket booth to replace the crammed and aging booths that have been used for years.

Family leave bill still unresolved

NEW HAVEN — The Vermont Legislature is considering two bills that address key components of how Vermonters are treated in the workplace — paid family leave and the minimum wage.
