Dance0820.jpg

NEW HAVEN/NEW YORK CITY — Like a lot of little girls in Addison County, Zoe Rabinowitz started studying dance at age five with longtime dance teacher Patty Smith.

Today the New Haven native is living the dream as a New York City-based dancer and choreographer about to set off on a tour of Jerusalem, Japan and Korea with Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre, a dance group that she co-founded 10 years ago and of which she is the associate artistic director.

Though dancing has allowed the 31-year-old to travel the world, she always remembers where she came from.

Power line questions remain unanswered

Posted on September 10, 2015 |

NEW HAVEN — The tidy yellow house in mint condition has stood unsold since first constructed in 2005.

“Within months of when we broke ground, they broke ground,” said contractor Ken Ruddy of Fiddlehead Construction, remembering when VELCO dug in on its 2006 upgrade to the New Haven to West Rutland electric power lines.

For 10 years the yellow cape on Town Hill Road in New Haven has sat, sometimes rented but largely unoccupied, in the shadow of the 90-foot towers that carry VELCO’s 345 kV transmission lines across Addison County.

Posted on September 3, 2015 |

NEW HAVEN — Some residents and elected officials are looking for answers to some basic questions from Anbaric Transmission about the company’s proposal to build a converter station at the New Haven VELCO substation to connect a 400 megawatt power line to the New England electric power grid.

The need for answers is particularly acute in a town that, in the words of a resident at an informational meeting last week, increasingly feels “like a dumping ground” for energy projects.

New Haven wary of yet another transmission line proposal

Posted on August 27, 2015 |
By Gaen Murphree

NEW HAVEN — A standing-room-only crowd packed the meeting room at the New Haven town offices Monday night to hear a proposal for a renewable-energy transmission line project that would bring 400 megawatts of wind power and hydropower from upstate New York into the New England grid at the Vermont Electric Power Co. (VELCO) substation in New Haven.

While some welcomed the potentially huge property tax payments the project would bring to New Haven, others worried that it would have an undue adverse impact on the rural landscape.
