Break-in victims invited to view items recovered by police

NEW HAVEN — Vermont State Police are inviting any Addison County resident who has been the victim of a burglary or theft since 2010 to come to VSP’s Route 7 barracks in New Haven on Oct. 7 to view a cache of stolen property recovered from an Addison home.

The viewing hours next Monday are set for 10 a.m. until noon and from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Starline Rhythm Boys play Friday at Lincoln Peak

NEW HAVEN — The Starline Rhythm Boys will play at Lincoln Peak Vineyard on Friday, Aug. 30, 6-8 pm.

Now celebrating 15 years together, the trio plays vintage country, honky-tonk and rockabilly music with strong harmony vocals. Their repertoire includes many superb originals as well as covers of both classic and obscure numbers. Promoters say their music is great fun for both listening and dancing.

Beeman seeking new principal as Flint moves to Mary Hogan Elementary

NEW HAVEN — The Addison Northeast Supervisory Union and the Beeman Elementary School board are in the midst of a mid-summer effort to replace Beeman Elementary Principal Steve Flint, who resigned in July to take a job in Middlebury.

ANeSU Superintendent David Adams said last Friday that the job had been posted since Flint first contacted him in mid-July. Seventeen applications have been received, and an interview committee was formed. The district hopes to invite candidates for interviews this week and hire within two weeks.

Route 7 farm to combine sheep and solar arrays

NEW HAVEN — Commuters on Route 7 through New Haven are starting to notice rows of solar arrays going up on the west side of the highway, north of the Lime Kiln Road intersection

Soon, those who take a second look will also notice something unusual on the solar farm: a herd of sheep.

Canal barge will carry Vermont commodities to New York City

New Haven farm fosters better bat habitat

NEW HAVEN — Donald Mitchell, former Middlebury College professor turned bat savior, has converted his New Haven farm into a sanctuary for bats.

Mitchell tells the story of this experience in a book titled “Flying Blind,” which explains the reasons why he optimized his land for bat habitat, shows what was done to make it more suitable for the flying mammals, and chronicles a mental journey that Mitchell went through while accomplishing his work.

Family fetes 200 years in New Haven home

NEW HAVEN — Beverly Marshall Landon and her kin go back a long way in New Haven. She and family members gathered at the Fitts/Farr homestead at 730 River Road on June 5 to celebrate ownership of the stately white farmhouse for exactly 200 years.

Landon’s great-great-great-great-grandfather Simon Farr purchased the property from Ruloff Lawrence, who lived in Middlebury, for $3,000.

State seeks $2M to clean up New Haven gas station

NEW HAVEN — The Vermont Attorney General’s office reported last week that the state has received $2 million for cleanup of a contaminated gas station located in New Haven. The recovery resulted from a lawsuit brought by Attorney Gen. William Sorrell to recover payments that were made from the Vermont Petroleum Cleanup Fund (PCF) at the site and the future costs of cleanup from spills at the New Haven Mobil more than a decade ago.

New Haven voters correct budget, affirm ballots

NEW HAVEN — Voters in New Haven on Tuesday remedied an error in the town’s General Fund budget by approving, in Australian ballot voting, a supplemental spending increase of $218,997, which will be used to pay off owed school taxes to the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union.

There were 202 ballots cast; the supplemental budget increase passed 136-66.
