Eric Davis: Media asks wrong question on candidate

Posted on February 7, 2018 |
By Eric Davis

Christine Hallquist is the CEO of Vermont Electric Co-operative, a Johnson-based utility serving over 30,000 customers in eight Vermont counties. Hallquist told reporters last week that she is giving serious consideration to running for governor as a Democrat this fall, and that she would make an announcement about her plans later in the month.

Victor Nuovo: Rouseau and The Social Contract

Posted on February 7, 2018 |
By Victor Nuovo

Editor’s note: This is the third in a series of essays about political liberalism and conservatism.

Rousseau wrote “The Social Contract” to answer this question: Taking human beings as they are, that is, born free and self-interested, is it possible to discover a “legitimate and reliable rule of government” for them?

It is the same question that was asked by James Madison and the Federalists, so the question should be of great interest to us all.

Letter to the editor: Organic dairies would protect the lake

Posted on February 5, 2018 |
By James H. Maroney

Inadequately designed or antiquated wastewater treatment plants account for roughly 5 percent of the pollution in Lake Champlain. Upgrading or replacing these plants would require years and years and cost hundred of millions or even billions of dollars. When these plants are all upgraded, the pollution flowing into the lake from WWTPs would probably improve from 5 percent to 3 percent.

Letter to the editor: Description of Trump fits many

Posted on February 5, 2018 |
By Jim Peabody Sr.

I read with interest Victor Nuovo’s recent column in the Jan. 25 Addison Independent. It will take me a couple of re-readings to get the gist of his main premise. But, one excerpt in his essay is very clear and that is his very apt description of our current U.S. President. Victor notes that “..he (Trump) is a vulgar populist, an immoralist, a narcissistic celebrity, whose only interest is in self-aggrandizement.”

Ways of Seeing: Wealthy are threatening democracy

Posted on February 1, 2018 |
By Abi Sessions

My father would have been 100 years old this month, so I’ve been thinking about him lately. And since I am obsessed and depressed these days with the sorry state of our nation, I’ve been reflecting particularly on his idealistic and positive vision of America.

Jessie Raymond: A relaxing trip ... to the dentist?

Posted on February 1, 2018 |
By Jessie Raymond

Last Monday at the dentist’s office, I learned something about myself: I’m an unusual patient.

I don’t have a third set of teeth, and I can’t tune in talk radio on my fillings or anything. But, according to my dental hygienist, I’m odd because — confession time — I kind of like getting my teeth cleaned.

No, really.

I don’t mean that I adore it. I don’t count down the days, giddily anticipating my time in the chair. And of course I worry that the exam will reveal an expensive problem.

Letter to the editor: Thinking outside the Mt. School bond

Posted on February 1, 2018 |
By David Brynn

The $29.5 million bond over 30 years to provide a major facelift to our well-built but 50-year old school is moving forward toward the March 6 Town Meeting Day vote. I wish it was a $12-15 million bond over 15 years focused on addressing the lighting, ventilation, heat distribution, science facilities, and fair universal access issues. The latter option would pass resoundingly.
