Letter to the Editor: Much absent from Trump's speech

Posted on March 13, 2017 |
By David Brynn

Trump stayed on script. The Republicans had a good night and were mighty proud of themselves. Pelosi looked a bit lost. She really ought to move on. Pence looked like a nine-year-old who had just gotten a brand new baseball glove. Trump did a good job and it was great seeing him without his red tie around his neck and Bannon at his ear. Trump kept it positive and he worked to unite the assembled. Good for him. We needed a break from his overt angst.

Letters to the Editor: People should be willing to listen to others' viewpoints

Posted on March 13, 2017 |
By Colin McClung

In colleges and universities today we often emphasize practical classes that lead to greater employment opportunities. Due to the cost of education, this approach is often justified. Yet having spent parts of the last four decades as a student in higher education and the last thirteen years actively working with students, one possible byproduct I have witnessed in higher education as it is administered today is that ideas have become less objects of analysis and more a trigger point for threatening and dangerous concepts.

Letter to the Editor: Students correct in opposing 'hateful propaganda'

Posted on March 13, 2017 |
By Deirdre Kelly

I begin by locating myself as both an outsider to your Middlebury College community and a neighbor. Unequivocally the violence that erupted after the protests you did not plan and collectively we all mourn. Thank you for your thoughtful resistance to Charles Murray’s hateful ideologies.

Community Forum: Protesters fell for trolling tactics

Posted on March 10, 2017 |
By Bill McKibben

Canniness is a virtue, at least for organizers. When protest goes well — the women’s marches, the airport demonstrations — it helps immeasurably, limiting the right’s ability to act or at least exacting a high price in political capital. But protest can go badly too, and when it does it gives the bad guys a gift.

Eric L. Davis: Counter poor thinking with reason

Posted on March 9, 2017 |
By Eric L. Davis

Last week, protesters at Middlebury College shouted down Charles Murray and prevented him from speaking on his book “Coming Apart,” the plight of the white working class, and the election of Donald Trump. After Murray presented his comments in a video forum with Professor Allison Stanger, a mob, some of whose members were wearing masks to conceal their faces, assaulted Murray and Stanger as they were entering a car. Most of those who shouted down Murray, and perhaps a few of those who attacked Murray and Stanger, were Middlebury College students.

Gregory Dennis: Protest gives food for thought

Posted on March 9, 2017 |
By Greg Dennis

The events around author Charles Murray’s appearance on the Middlebury College campus have convulsed not just the campus but the community.

As news reports and commentaries have distributed word of the unruly crowd that blocked Murray’s speech, the events have taken on national significance.

There’s too much to be said about these events — which included a physical attack upon Murray and college personnel — to fit it all into one column. So I’ll offer just four points.

College student speaks out: Hate speech deserves no place in discourse

Posted on March 9, 2017 |
By Adriana Ortiz-Burnham

The voice that tells women, people of color, differently abled, low income, trans, and queer people that we should ask for less, need less, deserve less, that we are less — this is a voice that no longer needs a microphone.

That voice has been an omnipotent presence in our lives since before we were conscious that we could hear it. Those of us involved in the protests at Middlebury College on March 2 earned our place at Middlebury in spite of that voice, by actively fighting against that voice.

Letter to the Editor: Students acted shamefully

Posted on March 9, 2017 |
By Ralph Shepard

Perhaps the pampered and privileged Middlebury College students who recently protested against an invited campus speaker need a lesson in Civics with particular emphasis on the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution!

I served in the military for 22 years to defend the rights of both the speaker and those who disagree with his message. While I don’t agree with the speaker’s world view, I am very troubled by the lack of civility displayed by the students opposing it.

Letters to the Editor: Shutting down speaker sets a dangerous precedent

Posted on March 9, 2017 |
By Erin Ruble

I’m getting a bit tired of hearing about Donald Trump’s hair. Yes, it’s a bad comb-over, and yes, it can have a faint orange tint, but frankly, I wouldn’t care if he looked like an eight-foot tall hamster if I thought he were sane, competent, trustworthy and had the interests of America and Americans at heart.
