“Dear Mr. Dennis,

“I recently read your article in the Addison Independent issue dated March 1, 2012, about your thoughts at building a house in Vermont. I wish to take you to task.

“Some months ago you wrote an article about how you considered yourself a ‘Vermontaholic’ citing various attributes about Vermont with which you compassionately connected…

Clippings: Child-free zone marred by adults

My wife Dottie and I were positively giddy.

Our first vacation sans kids (no offense, Diane and Mark) since 1998. So we booked, rather late in the game, a six-day stay at a resort in the Bahamas operated by a certain company named after casual, summertime footwear.

The promise: Plenty of peace, pampering and sunshine in a couples-only environment devoid of sippy cups, high chairs and pre-pubescent meltdowns.

Bad choice.

Recent studies indicate that sitting for any length of time is only slightly better for your health than riding a motorcycle drunk, while smoking, without a helmet. By the time you reach the end of this column, in fact, you’ll be lucky if you haven’t had a coronary.

Politically Thinking: Anonymous PACs sprout in Vt.

By Eric L. Davis

Advertisements from the Campaign for Vermont and from Vermonters for Health Care Freedom are running in Vermont newspapers, on radio stations and on news-oriented Web sites. These organizations, which are not subject to the campaign finance laws and regulations that apply to political action committees and political parties, will be major players in this year’s elections.

Between the Lines: Weighing coal weighers and consolidation

There are about 626,000 Vermonters — a number smaller than the population of Memphis, Tenn. Compared to the single government of that medium-sized city, Vermont has 237 towns, nine cities, five unincorporated areas and four gores.

“We confront the 21st-century challenges of delivering good government with a 19th-century governance structure,” says Bruce Hiland, who chairs the Cornwall selectboard. He featured the contrast between Vermont and Memphis governance in his remarks at the recent Cornwall town meeting.

Around the bend: Warily shifting into spring mode

Posted on March 8, 2012 |

Back in December, when the weather failed to live up to standard expectations for a Vermont winter — that is, cold, dark, snowy and generally miserable — no one panicked. “There’s still a lot of winter left,” everyone said, in a tone of optimism or, at least in my case, dread for what the next three months might hold.

And when January similarly broke tradition by depriving us of the usual treacherous weather and its associated crankiness, that was OK too, because we still had February and March to look forward to/endure.

The Chinese view of a country is drastically different from America’s, but it has a lot in common with Vermont towns.

In Chinese, the word for “country” is pronounced guojia. Literally translated back into English guojia means “land family.” This idea — that a country is a family of people that support each other — is deeply ingrained in the Chinese psyche.
