Man cited for sexual assault with a minor

ORWELL — A 68-year-old Orwell man was released on $50,000 bail on Monday after pleading innocent in Addison County Superior Court, criminal division, to a felony charge of sexual assault without consent, allegedly perpetrated against the same juvenile victim for which he has already been charged with aggravated sexual assault on a minor.

Eastman sees a clear path to the Statehouse

ORWELL — Many political candidates find themselves competing in multiple elections before finally winning a seat in the Vermont House. Some never quite muster enough votes to get in.

Then there’s Alyson Eastman, a first-time candidate who finds herself with no competitors in her bid for the Addison-Rutland seat representing Benson, Orwell, Shoreham and Whiting. Barring a successful write-in challenge, Eastman, an Orwell independent, will take the place of Rep. Will Stevens, I-Shoreham, when the Legislature reconvenes next January.

Two longtime educators wrapping up careers at Orwell Village School

ORWELL — At the end of this school year the Orwell Village School will say a final goodbye to two longtime teachers — Susan Young and Pat Dubois.

Young, a first-grade teacher, leaves the school after teaching various ages for nearly 40 years. Dubois retires after 13 years of teaching English Language Arts (ELA) and social studies to sixth- through eighth-graders in Orwell.

Former school bus driver charged in sex assault case

ORWELL — An Orwell man was ordered to jail in lieu of $50,000 bail after pleading innocent in Addison County Superior Court (criminal division) on May 13 to a felony count of aggravated sexual assault on a minor.

Orwell library awarded $1,000 to buy kids books

ORWELL — State Librarian Martha Reid, on behalf of the Winnie Belle Learned Fund of the Vermont Public Library Foundation, recently presented a grant of $1,000 to the Orwell Free Library in Orwell.

The library used the funding to enhance its collection of early reader books for local children. A new shelf, paid for by the Friends of the Orwell Free Library, will house the collection.

Outhouse used to raise funds for Orwell's 250th birthday celebration

ORWELL — Almost every day for the past month, an Orwell resident has awoken to find an outhouse on his or her front lawn that wasn’t there when they retired to bed the previous night.

Whether they welcomed the new facility in their yard or despised it, all knew that it was there for a good cause. A committee had organized the depositing of the old fashion port-a-potty around town as a way to raise money for this weekend’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Orwell town charter and to get people excited about the big party.

Mount Independence to host two hikes this weekend

ORWELL — Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell is offering two outdoor programs on the weekend of Aug. 3 and 4.

First, on Saturday, Aug. 3, naturalist Sue Wetmore will lead a fun afternoon for children and their “adults” exploring nature on the Mount. The program starts at 1 p.m. Attendees will meet at the Mount Independence State Historic Site museum.

Program brings 1777 medicine to life

ORWELL — Few people know that the largest hospital built by Americans during the Revolutionary War was at Mount Independence in Orwell. The Mount Independence State Historic Site cranks up the time machine on Sunday, July 28, at 2 p.m. to explore the story of health and medicine during the revolution on Mount Independence with the program, “An Investigation Into the Revolutionary Mind: What Were You Thinking, Dr. Jonathan Potts?”

Mt. Independence to host Revolutionary War re-enactment

ORWELL — The Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell hosts a program on Friday, July 5, 2013, to commemorate the major Revolutionary War decision of the Americans to withdraw from Mount Independence in the face of British Lt. Gen. John Burgoyne and his fleet on the night of July 5 and 6, 1777. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Learn about archaeology at historic Orwell site

ORWELL — Vermont historian and attorney Paul Gillies will offer a special program at the Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell on Saturday, June 8, at 2 p.m. His topic will be “Relics and Souvenirs: Lay Archaeologists and the Uncovering of Vermont.” This is the annual Robert J. Maguire lecture sponsored by the Mount Independence Coalition, the official friends group for the site.
