Orwell school receives grant to explore town's heritage

ORWELL — Orwell Village School grades six through eight received the 2017 Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership Corridor of Commerce Grant. Through grant funding, students will explore the historical commercial heritage of the town of Orwell through an integrative program of history, interpretive dance and the creation of a streaming multimedia timeline. The project will be implemented mid-February through March and will culminate in a public performance open to the community (date TBD).

Candidates sought for Addison-Rutland House seat

MONTPELIER — Gov. Phil Scott is seeking candidates from the Addison-Rutland legislative district to fill the Vermont House of Representatives seat being vacated by Rep. Alyson Eastman, I-Orwell.

Eastman, who won re-election to her second term unopposed last fall, was appointed by Gov. Scott to be deputy secretary of the Agency of Agriculture.

“I am looking for someone who, like Alyson, will be a dedicated public servant and representative for the people of Shoreham, Orwell, Benson and Whiting,” said Gov. Scott in a press release.

Orwell fixture returns to the family: Two new Buxtons take over store

ORWELL — Buxton’s Store, a fixture on Orwell’s Main Street fixture, is set to return to being a Buxtons’ store.

Orwell couple Andy and Mary Buxton are ready on Monday to sit down and buy the store and the home that goes with it from Doug Edwards, who has owned and operated the grocery (and more) store for the past decade. Edwards bought Buxton’s Store in 2006 from Andy Buxton’s grandparents, Dick and Thelma Buxton, who ran the business for about 40 years.

Superintendent of Orwell-area schools to step down at end of school year

ORWELL — Add another major task to the Addison-Rutland Supervisory Union’s 2017 agenda: Find a new chief executive.

Already preparing for a Town Meeting Day vote on school governance consolidation, the ARSU — which includes Orwell and five neighboring Rutland County communities — is now in the market for a new superintendent. Current Superintendent Ron Ryan announced last week he will leave his job in June after 20 years with the district.

Orwell Glass heats up workshops

ORWELL — According to John Chiles, Orwell Glass’s owner and chief glassblower, the newest and coolest thing to videotape on a GoPro is molten glass.

Chiles leads glassblowing workshops throughout the year at Orwell Glass’s space at the Maritime Museum in Orwell. The workshops are open to anyone with a curiosity about the craft. Many of these curious folk are children.

Orwell man killed when car goes off slippery Route 74

CORNWALL — Robert J. Fields of Orwell was killed Thursday afternoon when the car he was driving went off a snow-covered Route 74 in Cornwall and struck a tree.

Vermont State Police reported that Fields, 69, was driving a 2003 Chevy Suburban westbound on Route 74 during a snowfall when the vehicle traveled off the north side of the road at around 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 29.

The Suburban continued off the roadway and collided with a tree. Fields, who was wearing a seat belt, was the only one in the vehicle.

ORWELL — In addition to the task of naming a new Addison County state’s attorney (see related story), Governor-elect Phil Scott during his first month on the job will be asked to fill a House seat being vacated by Orwell independent Alyson Eastman, who has agreed to serve as Scott’s deputy secretary of agriculture.

Eastman’s independent status will give Scott even more flexibility in selecting her successor for the Addison-Rutland House seat that represents Orwell, Shoreham, Whiting and Benson.

Benefit bluegrass concert on tap in Orwell

ORWELL — The Fried Dough Boys — musicians Colin McCaffrey, Dono Scrabner and Freeman Corey — will bring an eclectic mix of music from traditional, old country, bluegrass, and folk to the Orwell Town Hall on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Orwell Free Library, and refreshments will be provided. Tickets are $10/adult; $8/senior; and $5/children.

McCaffrey, a multi instrumentalist, singer and songwriter; Scrabner, a superb guitarist; and Corey, with his own musical fiddle style, bring a wide range of hot and sweet music to Vermont.

Orwell's Eastman to join Scott's cabinet as deputy ag secretary

MONTPELIER — Governor-elect Phil Scott on Wednesday announced the appointment of Addison-Rutland Rep. Alyson Eastman, I-Orwell, as the new deputy secretary of the Vermont Agency of Agriculture.

Her appointment means that Scott will need to appoint a replacement to serve out the two-year term to which Eastman was re-elected last month. Eastman ran unopposed for the seat that represents Orwell, Shoreham, Whiting and Benson.
