Thanks to Bixby, Northlands students have Wi-Fi; others next?

VERGENNES — Phase Two of the Northlands Job Corps student Internet Wi-Fi arrived much more quickly than Phase One, which was the product of a yearlong effort by Northlands executives, its Student Government Association, and Bixby Library officials and volunteers.

On Wednesday last week, the Vergennes center’s 220 young vocational students who gathered in and around the campus chapel, home of the center’s new Wi-Fi hub, had for the first time to enter user names and passwords to log onto the network.

Country Home Products sold to Wisconsin manufacturer

VERGENNES/WAUKESHA, Wis. — Generac Holdings Inc., a designer and manufacturer of power generation equipment and other engine-powered products, announced this week the Aug. 1 acquisition of Country Home Products Inc. and its subsidiaries, according to a company press release.

Founded in 1985 and headquartered in Vergennes, Country Home Products manufactures power equipment used for property maintenance. Primarily sold in North America under the DR and Neuton brand names, CHP employs more than 200 people in its headquarters and in Charlotte and Winooski facilities.

Country Home Products of Vergennes sold to Wisconsin company

VERGENNES/WAUKESHA, Wis. — A Wisconsin company that makes power generation equipment and other engine-powered products announced today that it had bought home and garden equipment manufacturer Country Home Products, which is based in Vergennes.

Generac Holdings Inc. acquired Country Home Products Inc. and its subsidiaries effective Aug. 1. The value of the transaction was not announced, but the company said it would make that number known during a quarterly earnings conference call on Thursday.

Ann Rivers answered the call in the city and environs with VARS

VERGENNES — “I miss it. I’ll be honest: I miss it,” said Ann Rivers, who devoted more than two decades to serving her community on the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad. “When the sirens go, I miss it.”

Rivers, 66, retired from VARS this past April after 21 years spending countless hours in and out of ambulances and helping people in all kinds of emergency situations.

“But it’s time to travel and spend more time doing fun stuff,” Rivers, 66, said in a recent interview.

Federal grant helps city schools run summer and afterschool programs

VERGENNES — The second year of Vergennes Union High School and Vergennes Union Elementary School summer programs funded by an $830,703 21st Century Learning Centers (21C) Grant is just now winding down, and includes a wide variety of offerings.

VUHS has been running summer and afterschool programs with help from 21C grants since 2009, when the school was first awarded $487,000 to support programming.

Students learn outdoor skills as they prep for 'Zombie Apocalypse'

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union Middle School language arts teacher Meghan McGrath on Thursday morning gave 10 incoming middle school students their final instructions before they left a Vergennes Union High School classroom to prepare for a zombie apocalypse.

“Grab a snack. Grab a tool,” McGrath said.

VERGENNES — The first book of its kind to offer a comprehensive study of the secrets, traditions and techniques of Japanese wooden boatbuilding is now available for purchase. “Japanese Wooden Boatbuilding,” written by Vergennes-based boatbuilder and writer Douglas Brooks and published by Floating World Editions, is a fascinating book that fills a large and long-standing gap in the literature on Japanese crafts.

Bixby to host outdoor movie

VERGENNES — Bixby Library in Vergennes presents an outdoor Family Movie Night on Wednesday, July 29, at 8 p.m. in the parking lot behind the library.

The public is invited to bring a chair and come out to watch “The Painted Hills,” a 1951 MGM Lassie movie classic. The show starts at 8 but people are encouraged to show up early to find a spot. Snacks will be available from Hog & Harvest.

Developers of underwater cable offer Vermont $720 million

LAKE CHAMPLAIN — Developers of a planned 154-mile high-voltage transmission cable that would run beneath Lake Champlain agreed to pay the state $720 million over the project’s expected 40-year life, should it be approved by regulators.

The $1.2 billion, 1,000 megawatt transmission line, known as the New England Clean Power Link, would carry hydroelectric and wind power generated in Canada to metropolitan energy markets in the Northeast.

New life breathed into Vergennes Partnership

VERGENNES — After hearing a Tuesday plea from Vergennes Partnership board members, who said their group has new energy, structure and ideas, the Vergennes City Council agreed to double city support for the partnership to $15,000.

Council members had already devoted $7,500 in their recently adopted general fund budget to the organization that is charged with promoting the economic health and appearance of downtown Vergennes. At their Tuesday meeting they voted unanimously to give another $7,500 from the city’s Water Tower Fund.
