VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board on Monday settled on an $8.97 million budget proposal to put before Addison Northwest Supervisory Union voters in March. The plan would increase spending at VUHS by a little less than 2 percent — essentially back to the school’s 2007-2008 level.

Monday’s action followed a Jan. 3 meeting at which the VUHS board asked administrators to cut back their recommendation of a 2.47-percent hike to less than 2 percent.

VERGENNES — The newest addition to the Vergennes landscape towers over the Northlands Job Corps campus and is capable of powering 20 homes.

On Dec. 30, Vermont contractors Engineers Construction and Encore Redevelopment finished installing a 121-foot-tall wind turbine on a knoll on the north end of the Northlands Job Corps campus.

The windmill, built in Barre by Northern Power Systems, will be owned and operated by Green Mountain Power, but the Vergennes job-training center will receive 10 percent of its power output.

VERGENNES — At the suggestion of two residents who sit on other city boards, Vergennes aldermen on Dec. 20 agreed to consider at a future meeting adopting a formal conflict of interest policy.

The recommendation came from school board member Cheryl Brinkman and planner Alex McGuire, who asked aldermen to either consider adopting a conflict of interest policy or ordinance, or give residents the option of adopting one on Town Meeting Day.

Vergennes will vote on higher petition threshold

Posted on December 29, 2011 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — After a spirited discussion about local democracy, on Dec. 20 Vergennes aldermen agreed to put a measure on the March ballot that, if approved by city residents, would increase the threshold needed by petitioners to force a citywide revote from 5 to 10 percent.

That compromise move came after a proposal by residents Cheryl Brinkman and Alex McGuire requesting the council place an article on the ballot to raise the petition bar to 20 percent.

Opera house backers seek city funding

Posted on December 29, 2011 |

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen are considering a request from Friends of the Vergennes Opera House (FVOH) President Allison Rimmer that the City Hall theater receive $15,000 of ongoing annual city support in response to budget woes brought on by the recession.

Rimmer told aldermen on Dec. 20 that the FVOH will also approach the selectboards in Ferrisburgh, Addison, Panton and Waltham for financial help, much as Bixby Library officials have done — and with much the same rationale.

VERGENNES — “I’ve always had a secret love for weapons and armor,” said Michael McEnerney.

The 20-year-old apprentice armorer from Vergennes recently completed his first major project, a scale mail and chain mail vest that weighs over 40 pounds. The breast is an interlocking fabric of anodized aluminum scales, bright green and subtly cupped. As heavy as the piece is, it looks as delicate as feathers.

FERRISBURGH — Car dealer Tom Denecker recently abandoned a two-year effort to persuade Vergennes to extend a city sewer line a few hundred feet across Route 7 to his Ferrisburgh auto dealership.

It is the latest in a series of episodes in which city officials have weighed the impact of new Ferrisburgh hook-ons to the city sewer system vs. increased revenue the city could secure.

Probe into city death to continue

Posted on November 23, 2011 |
By Wilson Ring (AP)

VERGENNES (AP) — The Vermont Attorney General’s office is trying to determine if a crime was committed when a woman attempting to rob a Vergennes convenience store in September died while she was held down by a store clerk. The state medical examiner late last week ruled the death of the woman a homicide.

On Friday, the state health department released the death certificate of Yemella Sprauve, who died Sept. 28 after she had been held down by the Champlain Farms clerk who took a knife away from her during an early morning struggle.
