Former deputy sheriff files lawsuit for wrongful termination

BURLINGTON — A former Addison County deputy sheriff maintains he was fired from his job last year after he believes comments he made during a secret session of the Leicester selectboard were later shared with his boss, Sheriff Donald Keeler Jr.

Mark Stacey filed a civil lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Burlington last week claiming a wrongful termination by Keeler and the Addison County Sheriff’s Department.

Each year, Castleton University presents their Castleton Scholars Celebration: A Showcase of Original Student Work. The annual celebration gives the university the opportunity to showcase the rich variety of students’ scholarly and creative endeavors across academic departments and programs. Each presentation arises from course assignments, capstone experiences, and independent study programs, all supported and guided by faculty mentors.

Gov. Scott vetoes budget and property tax bill

MONTPELIER — Gov. Phil Scott on Tuesday vetoed H.518, the state budget, and H.509, the property tax bill.

In his veto message, Scott said he was rejecting the bills because lawmakers failed to pass his proposal to save $26 million on teacher health care. He also cited other problems with both bills.

Conservation districts protecting rivers

WAITSFIELD, — This spring, Vermont’s Natural Resources Conservation Districts (NRCDs) have planted trees on over 20 acres of buffers on stream banks and shorelines throughout the state to help protect water quality.

Over the past four years, over 60 acres of riparian buffers have been installed throughout Vermont through the Trees for Streams program, planting over 22,000 trees on nine miles of riverbanks and shorelines.

State police omit breath test results from DUI reports: Media concerned about new policy

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont State Police press releases related to drunken driving cases no longer include results of the preliminary breath test (PBT) for drivers who submit to that test after they are stopped.

That decision is based on a directive from key Vermont Department of Public Safety officials, including Commissioner Tom Anderson, who assert — among other things — that making PBT results public prior to a drunken driving suspect’s arraignment might affect his or her ability to get a fair trial.

Vermont Gas fined $25,000 for destruction of rare sunflowers

MONKTON — Vermont Gas Systems was fined $25,000 late last month by the Public Service Board for the destruction of a rare plant during the construction of a 41-mile natural gas pipeline into Addison County.

The penalty is in addition to a $33,687.50 fine that the state Environmental Court in December assessed against Vermont Gas for the same incident.

State milk production up slightly

VERMONT — The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service recently reported that milk production in Vermont during April totaled 230 million pounds, up 0.9 percent from April 2016.

The average milk price received by Vermont farmers in March 2017, at $18.90 per hundredweight, was down 70 cents from February 2016 but up $2.40 from March a year ago.

Local teachers honored as 'unsung heroes'

COLCHESTER — In honor of National Teacher Appreciation Week May 8 through May 12, the admissions office at Saint Michael’s College asked first-year students to share about the teachers who truly made a difference in their lives and inspired them to pursue higher education. Students responded immediately with heartfelt words of praise for the teachers who had meant so much to them.

Two Addison County students identified teachers that made a significant difference in their lives, nominating those teachers as St. Michael’s “Unsung Heroes.”
