Garden strategies for preventing fruit fly infestations of soft fruit

VERMONT — The University of Vermont Extension Master Gardener Helpline has received several calls recently from Vermont gardeners complaining about their blueberries getting soft right after picking. This is likely a result of an infestation by a pest called the spotted wing drosophila (SWD).

This small fruit fly first showed up in the state in 2011 just after Hurricane Irene and has caused problems in all soft fruits, especially those that ripen late in the season such as blueberries, fall raspberries and grapes.

Vermont Foliage Report: Season's spectacular display blazes across Northeast Kingdom

MONTPELIER — As late summer weather continues to bring warmth, plenty of sunshine, and scattered showers, fall foliage colors are developing nicely, albeit gradually, throughout most of Vermont. The Northeast Kingdom is fast approaching peak color and is expected to be at 50-75 percent peak at many locations over the coming weekend.

Similar conditions are emerging at higher elevations along the Green Mountains, although the majority of Vermont is still exhibiting early stage color.

Vermont to be represented at the Big E

Vt. seniors needed for survey on aging

VERMONT — The Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living (DAIL) is conducting a survey to better understand the needs of older Vermonters and the services and resources available to them. The results from this survey will help DAIL to develop Vermont’s next State Plan on Aging, a guiding document that outlines how the state of Vermont and the network of Agencies on Aging and service providers will strive to meet the needs of older Vermonters over time.

Equifax faulted in credit data breach

MONTPELIER — Vermont’s attorney general is considering going to court to protect the more than 240,000 Vermonters affected by a data breach at the credit rating agency Equifax.

The Vermonters affected are among the 143 million Americans whose information was exposed at Equifax, one of three major credit reporting agencies.

Flanders Award offering stipends to traditional Vermont musicans

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Folklife Center  has announced the creation of the Flanders Award for Traditional Vermont Music.

Created by Vermont musician, Deb Flanders to honor the work of her great aunt, Helen Hartness Flanders, the Flanders Award for Traditional Vermont Music provides a stipend to a Vermont musician aged 15-29 to support the perpetuation and performance of the traditional Yankee and Franco-American musical repertoire of the state.

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month. Pain comes in many forms: arthritis, cancer, post-surgery, acute injuries and chronic injuries. Acute pain is obvious and distressing and hard to miss —think of a broken leg or an injury from falling down the stairs. Chronic pain can be subtle — some may just think their pet is getting old. Kelly Brush ride raises a half-million dollars for adaptive sports gear

MIDDLEBURY/BURLINGTON —The 12th Annual Kelly Brush Ride powered by VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations, drew 810 cyclists and 40 adaptive athletes who raised more than $521,000 to empower those with paralysis through sport and recreation and to prevent ski racing injuries.

The event was held Saturday, Sept. 9, in Middlebury. The cyclists started rides of 20, 50 and 100 miles at the Middlebury College football stadium and pedaled out to the Lake Champlain Bridge and around Addison and Chittenden counties before returning to the starting point.
