MONTPELIER — Greta Hardy-Mittell, a junior at Middlebury Union High School, stood on the steps of the Vermont Statehouse last Saturday afternoon counting the speakers left until it was her turn. Clutching a folded paper copy of a self-authored poem, the nerves she had quieted that morning began to resurface.

The sign-waving, pussy-hat-wearing crowd before her — expected to be only a few thousand — was estimated at 15,000-20,000 by Vermont State Police, making it the largest protest ever held in Vermont, according to organizers.

Scott touts need for level-funded education spending

Posted on January 26, 2017 |
By Anne Galloway VTDigger.org

MONTPELIER — Gov. Phil Scott made good on his promise to level fund the state’s budget and education spending in his first budget address to lawmakers on Tuesday.

The governor has not proposed any additional fees or taxes.

The Scott administration eliminates a $75 million General Fund budget gap in part by moving the $35 million annual teachers’ retirement obligation to the Education Fund.

The remaining $40 million General Fund shortfall is made up by cuts in human services expenditures and savings from the Medicaid program.

By Addison Independent

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department reports that bear hunters in Vermont had a safe and successful hunting season in 2016. Preliminary numbers show that hunters took 697 black bears during the 81days of the two-part early and late bear seasons. There also were no hunting-related shooting incidents.

This is higher than the past 10-year average of 520 bears being taken, but it is consistent with the goal of stabilizing the bear population to within 4,500 to 6,000 bears, according to Fish & Wildlife Department bear biologist Forrest Hammond.
