To learn more about Vermont’s deaf community, the public is invited to attend “Vermont’s Deaf Culture: Building Bridges Through Theater” with Julia Kitonis and Don Petit-Homme on May 17 at Bristol’s Holley Hall from 7-8:30 p.m.

Police in Brattleboro shoot suspect in Vergennes robbery

BRATTLEBORO — The man suspected in the May 1 armed robbery of Small City Market in Vergennes was shot by Brattleboro and Vermont State police this past Friday night while they were trying to apprehend him as a suspect in two other robberies.

Mark Triolo, 46, of Texas was listed in stable condition at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., on Saturday

Vt. Department of Wildlife to hold deer hearings May 8 & 10

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department and Board will hold public hearings May 8 in Rutland and May 10 in South Burlington to recap the results of the 2017 deer seasons and review the antlerless deer hunting proposal for this year.

The hearings are scheduled for 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. as follows:

•  Tuesday, May 8, at Rutland High School, 22 Stratton Rd., Rutland.

•  Thursday, May 10, at South Burlington High School, 550 Dorset St., South Burlington.

Only 13 hunters will be awarded moose permits

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Board voted on April 25 to have 13 moose hunting permits awarded this year.  By law, five permits will be available to Vermont military veterans and up to three permits will be available for “Special Opportunity” recipients with life-threatening illnesses; the remaining five permits will be auctioned in accordance with regulations.

Applications set for conservation camps

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department says it still has a few openings at its Green Mountain Conservation Camps this summer. The camps are a great opportunity for 12 to 14 year olds who want to learn about Vermont’s wildlife and gain outdoor skills.

Gov. Hoff ushered in era of change in Vermont

Philip Hoff was the Democratic candidate for Vermont governor in 1962 when he called his father in Massachusetts with an invitation to dinner on election night.

“I don’t know,” Hoff would remember his father saying. “Are you going to win?”

“Dad, they’ve never elected a Democrat by popular vote in the history of the state,” the candidate replied. “I can’t promise you that. But I think I’ve got a shot.”

Students participate in Castleton mentoring program

CASTLETON — Eight Addison County young adults who are studying at Castleton University have become certified members of the Castleton University Mentoring Program.

Those eight local mentors are Ryan Crowningshield and Justin Connor of Addison, Danielle Forand and Rachael McCormick of Starksboro, Jane Russell of Vergennes, Angela Dupoise of New Haven, Aaron Smith of Middlebury and Monica Connor of Orwell.

Statewide school safety assessed

VERMONT — A statewide safety assessment of 422 schools conducted by local, county, and state law enforcement in partnership with Vermont schools was recently completed, according to an April 19 news release. That report shows that 96 percent of Vermont schools take part in emergency preparedness activities.

Gov. Phil Scott ordered the assessments after the school shooting plot was uncovered and averted in Fair Haven this past February.

Learn to prevent Lyme Disease in dogs

April is Prevent Lyme Disease in Dogs Month. Most people have heard of Lyme disease and know how prevalent it is in Vermont, but may not know much about it.

Lyme disease is spread through deer tick bites and caused by a bacteria called borrelia burgdorferi. This disease can cause your dog to be lame, lethargic and not want to eat. In more severe cases, it can lead to kidney disease and rarely death. Preventing Lyme disease through vaccines and preventatives is the best way to keep your dog healthy.
