Bankruptcy forces Rutland County dairy to auction cows and machinery

IRA — The 108 head of cattle are gone. So are the tractors, balers and even the manure spreader.

They all went to the highest bidders at an auction earlier this month at Milky Way Farm in Ira after a creditor of the financially struggling Rutland County dairy operation called in a $152,000 loan.

Mary Saceric-Clark and her son, Robbie Clark Jr., had been trying for years to stave off the sale.

Vermont Secretary of State chosen to lead national association

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — On Monday, July 10, Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos was chosen by a bi-partisan group of his peers as President-elect of the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) at the Summer Conference in Indianapolis.

NASS serves as a medium for Secretaries across the country to share ideas and best practices in the development of public policy as it relates to elections and voting, business services and policy relating to state archival work and records management.

Local tapped for Vermont Climate Action Commission

UPDATED: MONTPELIER — Middlebury businessman Bill Laberge, of Laberge Insurance, and Bridport farmer Marie Audet, of Blue Spruce Farm, are two Addison County residents named to the newly formed Vermont Climate Action Commission.

The commission was formed by an executive order from Gov. Phil Scott this past Thursday, July 20.

Among the commission’s responsibilities will be the task of unifying Vermont’s ambitious climate and economic goals.

Filmmaker reflects on novelist Howard Frank Mosher

Vermont novelist Howard Frank Mosher died on Jan. 29 this year. Filmmaker Jay Craven has worked closely with Mosher since 1985, making five films based on his stories. Craven will be on tour this summer, screening his first Mosher feature film,“Where the Rivers Flow North,” and providing reflections on his three decades of collaboration with the Northeast Kingdom writer. Craven will present his program on Sunday, July 30, 7 p.m., at the Middlebury Town Hall Theater.

Regulators want answers on depth of gas pipeline

NEW HAVEN — Three months after natural gas started flowing through the 41-mile Addison Natural Gas Project pipeline from Colchester to Middlebury, Vermont Gas Systems continues to come under fire for deviations from construction specifications laid out in its state permit.

The Vermont Public Utility Commission has asked the company for explanations to account for construction-related deviations from the permit and evidence that no other deviations exist along the entire length of the pipeline.

Vermont needs help counting turkeys

MONTPELIER — Wild turkeys are found throughout most of Vermont, but their reproductive success is monitored annually by the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department with help from “citizen scientists,” who report the number and size of turkey families they see during August.

Vergennes-based program offers bikes for foster kids

VERGENNES — What’s a more quintessential Vermont childhood experience than riding a bicycle in the summertime? Yet for more than 1,000 children within the state’s foster care system, having a bike of their own may not be the norm.

That’s why Vergennes used bike shop Little City Cycles founded Green Mountain Foster Bikes, a volunteer-run, non-profit program that refurbishes discarded bicycles and donates them to foster kids.

Land access project connects prospective farmers with landowners

VERMONT — You can tell a lot about a farm by looking closely at the soil. That’s why the new, statewide program to recognize Vermont’s most environmentally friendly farmers will be based on soil-sampling and monitoring.

Last week Gov. Phil Scott announced the pilot launch of the new Vermont Environmental Stewardship Program (VESP), which will use soil-based analysis to identify farmers who are going above and beyond to protect our natural resources.
