Bohjalian, Sharrow selected for Governor's Arts Award

MONTPELIER — Two local folks will be among the recipients of the 2017 Governor’s Arts Awards. These awards, selected by the Vermont Arts Council, are presented annually to recognize outstanding individual and organizational contributions to the arts. Awards are given to educators, artists, performers, advocates, administrators, volunteers, and scholars. In 2017, Vermonters will be recognized for their contributions in five categories.

Vt. Supreme Court rules for Vermont Gas in Geprags Park case

MONTPELIER — In a Sept. 22 ruling, the Vermont Supreme Court upheld the Public Utilities Commission’s authorization of Vermont Gas Systems to install a section of the Addison Natural Gas Project through Hinesburg’s Geprags Park.

The 41-mile natural gas pipeline runs from Colchester to Middlebury and has been in operation since last April.

2018 Farm Bill debate is under way

BURLINGTON — Hearings, discussions and debates are well underway for the 2018 Farm Bill, the massive legislation that drives federal farm and food policy — effectively touching almost every person in Vermont.

“Now is the time. The nuts and bolts of putting this bill together is very much happening as we speak,” said Tom Berry, Sen. Patrick Leahy’s Vermont-based advisor on agricultural and natural resource issues.

Health Department confirms year’s first human case of West Nile Virus

BURLINGTON – Vermont health officials have confirmed the year’s first case of human illness due to West Nile virus. An Addison County resident was diagnosed earlier this month with neuroinvasive disease — a more serious form of the illness which affects the nervous system.

Garden strategies for preventing fruit fly infestations of soft fruit

VERMONT — The University of Vermont Extension Master Gardener Helpline has received several calls recently from Vermont gardeners complaining about their blueberries getting soft right after picking. This is likely a result of an infestation by a pest called the spotted wing drosophila (SWD).

This small fruit fly first showed up in the state in 2011 just after Hurricane Irene and has caused problems in all soft fruits, especially those that ripen late in the season such as blueberries, fall raspberries and grapes.

Vermont Foliage Report: Season's spectacular display blazes across Northeast Kingdom

MONTPELIER — As late summer weather continues to bring warmth, plenty of sunshine, and scattered showers, fall foliage colors are developing nicely, albeit gradually, throughout most of Vermont. The Northeast Kingdom is fast approaching peak color and is expected to be at 50-75 percent peak at many locations over the coming weekend.

Similar conditions are emerging at higher elevations along the Green Mountains, although the majority of Vermont is still exhibiting early stage color.

Vermont to be represented at the Big E

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Some Addison County businesses will be featured this week in the State Building at the Big E — New England’s largest agricultural fair.

Vermont will once again share its culture and heritage with more than 1 million attendees at the Big E. The fair kicked off last weekend in West Springfield, Mass., and will run through Oct. 1.

Vt. seniors needed for survey on aging

VERMONT — The Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living (DAIL) is conducting a survey to better understand the needs of older Vermonters and the services and resources available to them. The results from this survey will help DAIL to develop Vermont’s next State Plan on Aging, a guiding document that outlines how the state of Vermont and the network of Agencies on Aging and service providers will strive to meet the needs of older Vermonters over time.
