Nominations sought for Vt. award for educator of the year

VERMONT — The Vermont Humanities Council seeks nominations for its Victor R. Swenson Humanities Educator Award, which recognizes a Vermont educator in grades 6 through 12 who exemplifies excellence in the teaching of the humanities.

The recipient will receive a $1,000 check and public recognition at VHC’s fall conference on November 17 at UVM’s Dudley Davis Center. Last year’s winner was Marsha Cassel of Rutland High School.

Manure restrictions still in effect in wet weather

MONTPELIER — April 1 marks the end of Vermont’s winter manure-spreading ban for non-frequently flooded fields in Vermont, but with another cold and wet spring bringing adverse field conditions to most of Vermont, the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets (VAAFM) is issuing a spring stewardship reminder to ensure that farmers are aware that water quality rules will restrict manure-spreading activities until the weather and individual field conditions improve.

Senate OKs gun bill; Gov. Scott is up next

MONTPELIER — A landmark bill that would make a series of changes to the state’s gun laws has received final approval from the General Assembly.

Gov. Phil Scott, a Republican, says he intends to sign the three bills that introduce new restrictions on gun use and ownership.

The historic legislation was the subject of intense debate in the Democratically controlled Legislature. The House held two marathon sessions and the Senate engaged in contentious committee hearings and spirited floor debate.

Local students excel in state speaking contest

CHESTER — Each year, Lions Clubs throughout Vermont invite high school juniors and seniors to write and deliver a speech based on the current Lions Clubs International president’s theme for the year. At this year’s statewide competition in Chester, during the Vermont Lions District 45 Cabinet Meeting on Saturday, March 10, two of the three prize winners came from the Addison Independent’s coverage area.

Nominate Vermont's top dairy farm

BURLINGTON — University of Vermont Extension and the Vermont Dairy Industry Association (VDIA) are seeking nominations for the 2018 Vermont Dairy Farm of the Year. The deadline to submit is April 27.

The award, which has been presented annually since 1961, honors one outstanding dairy farm each year for overall excellence in dairying. Nominees are evaluated by a judging committee comprised of past winners on their overall farm management, innovative practices, milk quality, crops, pasture quality, conservation practices and promotion of the dairy industry.

With bears waking up, feeders are lures

MONTPELIER — Spring weather is welcomed by all. The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department would like to remind Vermonters that warm spring weather and melting snows, while a balm to human souls, will also cause bears to come out of their winter dens in search of food. With that in mind, the department recommends taking down bird feeders on April 1 to avoid attracting those hungry bears.

Updated: Sale of Clark Hinsdale's iconic dairy farm is sign of the times

CHARLOTTE — Clark Hinsdale III’s family has been farming on Vermont’s soils for seven generations in Addison and Chittenden counties.

A week ago (March 21), he auctioned off his herd of 250 milking cows, his farm implements and tools, his four robotic milkers and all the agricutural trappings of a lifetime in the dairy industry at one of Vermont’s most iconic dairy operations.

U.S. budget bill offers $1B in dairy subsidies

BURLINGTON — After Congress passed a massive budget deal in Washington, D.C., last month, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, was in the Green Mountain State touting a farming bill in the federal package that secured more than $1.1 billion in subsidies to stabilize the dairy industry.
