Addison County among hardest hit by last week's storm

ADDISON COUNTY — As of Friday night Green Mountain Power was expecting to have service restored to all but a handful of its Addison County customers, even though 400 homes, businesses and farms were still making do without electricity at about 10 a.m.

GMP spokesperson Dorothy Schnure said the company was focusing on Addison County on Friday because only another roughly 200 of its customers elsewhere in Vermont still lacked power after Monday morning’s major windstorm turned off electricity to more than 118,000 GMP customers and snapped 100 power poles in half.

MIDDLEBURY — “It’s a mess in Washington,” Congressman Peter Welch told a group of Champlain Valley specialty crop farmers who gathered in Middlebury last week to share their wish lists for the 2018 farm bill. MIDDLEBURY — Actor Jeremy Holm was driving from a gig in Stowe to his Vergennes home last September when his radio popped with some news he couldn’t ignore.

It was a story about the police chief in East Liverpool, Ohio, who had posted a photo on Facebook depicting two adult heroin addicts passed out in front seats of their vehicle, with their 4-year-old boy asleep in the backseat.

“The chief put that picture up because he needed help,” Holm recalled. “He said, ‘You can’t arrest yourself out of this problem.’”

First, on Jan. 10 troopers were notified by an Addison County sheriff’s deputy of a vehicle travelling east on Leicester Whiting Road at an extremely high rate of speed. When the deputy had seen two vehicles racing on Route 30 in Whiting, he activated his emergency blue lights, but only one vehicle pulled over.
