Middlebury driver arrested in Bristol

BRISTOL — Bristol police on Jan. 30 arrested a Middlebury woman on suspicion of driving with a suspended license.

Police stopped a vehicle driven by Rebecca M. Steinhauer, 25, just after midnight on West Street after a check of her registration determined that the owner of the vehicle, which was registered to Steinhauer, had a suspended license because of a driving under the influence conviction.

County's northeast towns look for full election slates

BRISTOL — Local residents have until Monday to file the necessary paperwork to appear on the ballot for town offices or school boards, but ballots in each of the five towns that comprise the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union are already shaping up.

Anyone who wishes to run for a town or school office must submit a nominating petition at their town office by 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26. Signatures from 1 percent of registered voters are required.

Voters will head to the polls on Town Meeting Day, March 3, to choose their representatives.

Bristol Police Log: Man arrested on warrant after traffic stop

BRISTOL — Bristol police on Jan. 16 arrested a Bristol man who was wanted by the Department of Corrections.

Around 11:45 p.m. last Friday evening, police pulled over a vehicle for driving with defective equipment. Dylan Devoid, 19, was a passenger in that vehicle, police said, and they arrested him on a warrant from the Department of Corrections for escape.

Police lodged Devoid at the Chittenden County Correctional Center without incident, and issued the driver a warning for the motor vehicle violation.

Bristol man pleads innocent in felony assault case

BRISTOL — A Bristol man on Monday pleaded innocent in Chittenden Superior Court, criminal division, to felony first-degree aggravated assault and three other charges in connection with a Jan. 3 incident during which he allegedly strangled a woman in their Bristol home and prevented her from calling emergency responders.

And court records confirm the alleged victim in this case is the same person that the defendant — 30-year-old Jason P. Vincent — was accused of assaulting last November.

Rep. David Sharpe to head education committee

BRISTOL — Addison County will have an important seat at the table when the Vermont Legislature gets to work this month on education finance reform, tabbed by many lawmakers as the top priority for the 2015 session.

Vermont House Speaker Shap Smith has picked Rep. Dave Sharpe, D-Bristol, to chair the House Education Committee, a panel that will clearly play a big role in devising and advancing any bills aimed at changing the manner in which the state’s public schools are financed.

This past year in Bristol and the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union, residents debated two major projects that would require taxpayer-approved bonds: a new Bristol firehouse and a renovated Mount Abraham Union High School.

The Bristol Fire Department inched closer to getting a new firehouse this year, a process that firefighters have discussed for more than two decades.
