MIDDLEBURY — Regular shoppers at Greg’s Meat Market will notice some new faces walking through the aisles — along with the absence of a familiar one.

Greg Wry on Tuesday formally sold the store to Bart Litvin and Lisa Hartman (see related story). The sale represents the end of an era and the beginning of a new one, though the new owners stressed they won’t tamper at all with the winning formula Wry has employed at the store for the past 28 years.

VERGENNES — Like virtually every company in the United States, Vergennes high-tech engineering firm Nathaniel Group Inc., which does business as Nathaniel Electronics, has felt the effects of the international economic slump.

Nathaniel has had to downsize. About a third of a workforce that numbered more than 40 in mid-2008 has either been laid off or left through what company founder Joel Melnick called attrition.

Now Melnick says the 25-year-old Panton Road firm sees light at the end of that economic tunnel — and it’s coming from light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

Route 116 pit hearing focuses on trucks

Posted on October 29, 2009 |
By John S. McCright

That was the crux of the discussion at a Monday evening hearing at which the Middlebury Development Review Board considered the application of Ronald and Susan Fenn to site a quarry on their property east of that stretch of Route 116, known locally as Case Street.

MIDDLEBURY — A local nonprofit will soon launch a competition in which the winner will be the one to have accomplished the least.

Sounds strange? Yes — until one realizes that the participants’ objective is to consume the least amount of energy possible.

And that’s exactly what 15 local businesses have pledged to do during the next three months as part of “Middlebury Unplugged,” a challenge organized by the Vermont Community Foundation (VCF).

"Cow Power" producers suffer losses

Posted on October 1, 2009 |
By Kathryn Flagg

ADDISON COUNTY — Central Vermont Public Service’s “Cow Power” program, which enlists farms to convert manure to electricity using on-farm anaerobic digesters, has been lauded in recent years as a revolutionary way to generate renewable energy and support local farms.

But wholesale energy prices plummeted earlier this year. With Cow Power rates contractually tied to the price of wholesale energy, farmers participating in the fledgling program found themselves producing two commodities at a loss: milk and electricity.
