Translators of literature coming to Ripton for conference

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College in June 2015 will welcome participants to the inaugural session of the Bread Loaf Translators’ Conference, the first conference to highlight the important role that literary translators of poetry and prose play in the United States and beyond.

Vermonters flock to join McKibben, 350.org at largest climate march ever

NEW YORK CITY — Hundreds of Vermonters on Sunday afternoon joined an estimated 350,000 people on the streets of Manhattan for the People’s Climate March, the largest climate demonstration in U.S. history.

“This is the biggest event any of us will ever be a part of,” said Greg Dennis of Cornwall. “You just got a sense that if we can get this many people out on the streets, we can make leaders pay attention.”

Climate change movement traces roots to Addison County

ADDISON COUNTY — Eight years ago, Bill McKibben led a five-day march from Ripton to Burlington to raise awareness about climate change. It culminated in a rally in Battery Park that drew 1,000 people, making the event likely the largest climate change demonstration in U.S. history at the time.

McKibben was pleased with the turnout that day, but was shocked to hear it had set an attendance record. Wasn’t climate change on the radar elsewhere in the United States?

New 15-foot sculpture greets returning Middlebury College students

MIDDLEBURY — When Middlebury College students returned to campus this week they were greeted by “Youbie Obie,” a large sculpture newly located on the northern edge of the campus, near Coffrin Hall and Le Chateau. Measuring some 15-1/2 feet in length and rising to 15-1/2 feet in height, the cor-ten steel construction consists of arcs and half-arcs in a rhythmic and commodious relationship that suggests a gate.

Middlebury art exhibit offers more than meets the eye

MIDDLEBURY — Kate Gridley’s exhibit “Passing Through” promises to be much more than an art exhibit. Along its travels through New England the show has stopped in the artist’s hometown of Middlebury, where Gridley will collaborate with area organizations and schools to connect her project to the local community.

Middlebury footballers help out at town rec. park

MIDDLEBURY — This past Wednesday, a series of upgrade and maintenance projects were accomplished at the Middlebury Recreation Park, with a helping hand from 40 Middlebury College football players.

According to Middlebury Parks and Recreation Department Director Terri Arnold, the 40 players were on hand for a couple hours and completed many tasks that had been prepped by town employees Yvon Pouliot and Dustin Hunt.

Middlebury College seeds squash center with new green roof

MIDDLEBURY — Gazing east from the Kenyon Lounge on the campus of Middlebury College, there’s a wonderful view — the campus’ sprawling athletic fields, golf course and Green Mountains in the distance.

That view just got a lot better, thanks to the installation last week of a new green roof on the school’s squash center, which opened last fall.

Middlebury, college ink land swap deal

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday unanimously approved an agreement with Middlebury College that formalizes a property swap that will lead to new municipal offices, a new recreation center and a new public park.

Local voters have already endorsed the town-gown deal, which calls for Middlebury to convey its current municipal building/gymnasium property at 94 Main St., along with another parcel at 6 Cross St., to the college.

College sees $49.9 million in donations

MIDDLEBURY — Fundraising improved significantly at Middlebury College over the last 12 months compared to the previous fiscal year, the school announced on July 25.

During the 2014 fiscal year, which ended on June 30, the college received more than $49.9 million in philanthropic support. This amount is $7 million more than the previous year, according to a college press release.

Speth offers vision to save Earth
