Opinion: College J-term truly enriching

I was pleased to read your recent front-page article on Winter Term (J-term) at Middlebury College.

This term made its debut in 1969 under the leadership of Dr. James I. Armstrong, college president at the time, who is quoted in a recent issue of the Middlebury Campus as having stated that “both students and faculty would benefit from the flexibility and freedom offered by the month-long reprieve between fall and spring semesters.”

Middlebury College students enjoy J-term's change of pace

MIDDLEBURY — For students at many colleges, January is typically a time to relax between fall term finals and the new semester. It is a month of home-cooked meals, showers without flip-flops, and nights spent on a comfortable mattress.

Middlebury College students, however, face a slightly different four weeks. From Jan. 6 to 31, students are enrolled in only one course that is chosen from a selection of offerings that differ from the usual academic fare.

Entrepreneur turns 'Recess' into a business

MIDDLEBURY — It’s an oft-repeated joke that still gets a chuckle or two: “Did you hear about (place name of butt of joke here)? His favorite subject at school was recess!”

Well, Alex Consalvo’s favorite subject these days is an enterprise called “Recess,” and he and business partner Ward Wolff are hoping to smile all the way to the bank.

Middlebury College updates governance as educational offerings grow

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College President Ron Liebowitz has left a lasting mark on Middlebury — both the college and the town. Liebowitz this past Thursday announced he will step down on June 30, 2015, from the top leadership position he has held since 2004.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday failed to muster enough votes to pass a revised term sheet outlining the mechanics of an agreement with Middlebury College on construction of a new town office building and recreation center, with some members voicing concern at the institution’s rejection of a request that the current municipal building/gym site be perpetually maintained as a public park.

Middlebury College football wins, remailns in title hunt

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College football team on Saturday kept its hopes alive for a share of the NESCAC title by defeating visiting Hamilton, 40-13.

The Panthers are 6-1, trailing only Wesleyan (7-0) and tied with Amherst, also 6-1. Wesleyan has to play at rival Trinity (5-2) on Saturday, while Amherst also has its rivalry game vs. Williams (2-5). The Panthers travel to meet Tufts (0-7).

Panther women's soccer to host NESCAC Final Four

MIDDLEBURY — The top-seeded Middlebury College women’s soccer team defeated visiting No. 8 Colby, 3-1, in a NESCAC quarterfinal on Saturday, and the 11-1-3 Panthers (8-1-1 NESCAC) will host the league’s final four this weekend.

The Panthers will entertain No. 6 Tufts (9-6, 5-5 NESCAC) at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and No. 2 Williams (11-2-2, 7-2-1) will square off against No. 4 Trinity (12-3, 7-3) in the other league semifinal.
