Montpelier, VT— This morning at Fairmont Farms in East Montpelier, Senator Patrick Leahy and Representative Peter Welch encouraged Vermont’s dairy farmers to enroll in the new Margin Protection Program (MPP) and announced a series of workshops for interested participants.

MPP is a voluntary insurance program included in the new Farm Bill that protects dairy farmers from market fluctuations in milk prices.  The program replaces the expired Milk Income Loss Contract Program (MILC).

MIDDLEBURY — Rebekah Chamberlain was disappointed when she showed up for her first week of classes as a high schooler. Last year as an eighth-grader in middle school, she’d been told she could buy locally produced Monument Farms milk in the Middlebury Union High School cafeteria.

But when lunchtime came around last month, Monument Farms milk was nowhere to be found.

“It’s, like, the best milk,” said Chamberlain, 14, of Bridport.

BURLINGTON — U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, flanked by Sen. Patrick Leahy and Rep. Peter Welch at a press conference in Burlington last Thursday, announced a new dairy insurance program to protect farmers against volatile price swings.

“I would urge farmers to sign up to this program for $100,” Leahy said. “It is a great investment and a chance to stop the boom and bust cycle we have.”

Community Forum: Don't just blame farmers for water pollution

This week's writer is Emerson Lynn, editor of the St. Albans Messenger

Franklin County has long held the distinction of producing more milk than any other county in Vermont, or New England. Dairy farmers have been to Franklin County what the Red Sox are to Boston.

There are easier professions, which explains why the average age of a dairy farmer includes a lot of gray hair, aching backs and not a lot of extended vacations.

And, increasingly, not a lot of sympathy.

Higher milk prices help dairy farmers play catch-up

By Zach Despart

ADDISON COUNTY — Local dairy farmers are riding a wave of high wholesale prices that some say will finally pull them out from the dairy crash of 2009.

“The prices we’re receiving now are much stronger,” said Bob Foster of Foster Brothers Farm in Middlebury.

Foster said much of the surge is due to high overseas demand.

Dairy farmers hurt by government shutdown and expiration of farm bill

Posted on October 10, 2013 |
By Zach Despart

WEYBRIDGE — The partial shutdown of the federal government and the expiration of the farm bill have put Addison County dairy farmers in a precarious position. Without a price stabilization program or access to crucial information like crop reports and other federal resources, farmers have to make important business decisions based on educated guesses rather than hard data.

But it’s not just the farmers who are suffering. Some of those who support farms and the farm economy are also closed out of jobs or frustrated by government shutdown.
