Bureaucratic snafu almost costs pre-K providers

ADDISON COUNTY — An accord reached on Tuesday between the Vermont Agency of Education and the three Addison County school districts has defused what was looming as a significant financial hit for area parents and dozens of early education providers participating in the state’s new universal pre-K program.

At issue was a decision by Addison Central, Northeast and Northwest supervisory unions to delay implementation of the universal pre-K program, including payments to local providers.

Stuff the Bus drive brings school supplies to county students

ADDISON COUNTY — This year the staff at the United Way of Addison County hosted a back-to-school donation drive known as ‘Stuff the Bus!’ The donation drive was held by placing school buses and volunteers  for collecting supplies at three different locations around Addison County: Vergennes, Bristol and Middlebury.

Group surveys families’ interest in pre-­kindergarten

ADDISON COUNTY — Act 166, a law passed by the Legislature in 2014, mandates that Vermont school districts provide 10 hours/week for 35 weeks (school-year) of pre-kindergarten to 3-, 4- and 5-year-old children (not in kindergarten) at no cost to families.

MIDDLEBURY — You’ll have to excuse educators with the county’s Diversified Occupations (D.O.) program if they are a little perplexed these days.

On the one hand, the Vermont Public Broadcasting Service has just hailed D.O. as one of four exemplary “champions” of education in Vermont for 2015, an honor that will include an award and a televised tribute during the month of September.

Opinion: Where have all the young ones gone?

In our national dialogue, education reform has been reduced to recitations about “international economic competitiveness” poorly garnished with a myopic sprinkling of test scores. But two recent Vermont reports suggest we embrace a broader and more interactive view of society and education. One is the Vermont Roots Migration Project released last December comparing young people who stayed in the state with those who left. The second is the Department of Labor’s workforce projections.
