Farmer ready to fire air cannon to protect crop, but talks with neighbors set

Posted on August 20, 2015 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — Although there is still time for a negotiated solution, the Ferrisburgh farmer who upset his lakefront neighbors a year ago by firing a propane cannon to protect his sweet corn crop said this week he is prepared to use the cannon again as soon as next week.

Wayne Stearns, owner of Crazy Acres Farm on Schoolhouse Road, said if the flock of starlings that lives on his farm starts attacking his corn, he is considering deploying a cannon that in 2014 fired thousands of times a day for about a month.

Views from the Vet: Get to know what goes on on a farm

Posted on August 20, 2015 |
By Joe Klopfenstein

Recently a client related a story to me. He was visited by representatives of the state occupational safety and health administration (OSHA). Apparently a passerby noticed material coming out of the barn doors while passing by on the road. The visitor was concerned enough to report the farmer for fumigating the farm with animals and workers inside. What was the mystery cloud? The farmer was applying fresh sawdust to the cows’ beds.

Gardeners, farmers beware: Light blight arrives in Vermont

Posted on July 15, 2015 |
By Addison Independent

BURLINGTON — The University of Vermont (UVM) Plant Diagnostic Clinic has identified its first case of late blight this year. The fungus-like organism was discovered on July 7 on potato foliage on an organic farm in Hinesburg.

Although the disease can infect tomatillos, eggplants, peppers, petunias and other members of the potato family, in Vermont it has only been found on tomatoes and potatoes in recent years. Damage from Phytophthora infestans, the pathogen causing late blight in these crops, was especially widespread in 2009.

ADDISON COUNTY — The outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in the Midwestern United States could have severe consequences for Vermont’s poultry producers. Although HPAI is not directly affecting Vermont at this time, the disease may begin to affect New England as early as fall of 2015, according to the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets.

This is of particular interest in Addison County, home to two of the largest poultry producers and one of the largest egg producers in the state, not to mention numerous backyard flocks.

BRIDPORT — A bill before the Legislature that aims to clean up Lake Champlain was the hot topic of a Monday legislative luncheon that focused on agricultural issues.

Two members of the House of Representatives, Democrat David Sharpe of Bristol and Republican Harvey Smith of New Haven, were on hand at the Bridport Community Hall to hear residents’ concerns about the bill and other farming topics.

The bill, H.35, would limit municipal, commercial and agricultural sources of pollution into the Lake Champlain watershed.
