Tiger girls' hockey earns shot at title

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team is going back to the Gut, and the Tigers are again going to try to make history.

A year ago at the University of Vermont’s Gutterson Arena, the Tigers defeated Burr & Burton in the Division II final for the program’s first championship.

After edging visiting No. 3 Northfield, 3-2, this past Saturday, this time the No. 2 Tigers are going after the team’s first Division-I crown in the program’s first appearance in a D-I final since 2004.

MUHS boys hockey season ends against tough U-32 team

MIDDLEBURY — In what might have been the Division II boys’ hockey championship game and not just a quarterfinal, on Wednesday No. 5 U-32 scored two late goals to edge No. 4 Middlebury, 2-1, at the Memorial Sports Center.

The teams entered the game with misleading records. The Raiders, 13-7-1 after the win, went 10-1-1 in their final 12 regular season games, while the 12-7-2 Tigers ended their season with an 11-3-2 record vs. Vermont D-II teams.

Men's hockey splits, recieves No. 7 seed

CLINTON, N.Y. — The Middlebury College men’s hockey team split two road games this past weekend and will enter the NESCAC postseason with the No. 7 seed and a 7-8-3 league record, 10-11-3 overall.

The Panthers are set to play at No. 2 Amherst (18-4-2, 14-4 NESCAC) this Saturday at 1 p.m. in a league quarterfinal. The Jeffs are ranked No. 10 among NCAA Division III teams and defeated the Panthers this past Friday, 4-0. The NESCAC final four will be played the following weekend and hosted by the highest remaining seed.

Women's hockey falls to No. 2 Plattsburgh; to host on Saturday

MIDDLEBURY — In a Saturday duel of top NCAA Division III women’s college hockey teams, visiting No. 2 Plattsburgh edged No. 3 Middlebury, 4-3, denying Panther coach Bill Mandigo his 500th career victory in the process.

Mandigo’s team will look for that milestone victory this Saturday at 3 p.m. in a NESCAC quarterfinal at Chip Kenyon Arena, when the top-seeded Panthers (18-3-3, 13-1-2 NESCAC) host No. 8 Hamilton (10-10-4, 4-9-3 NESCAC).

If the Panthers win, they will host the NESCAC final four the following weekend.

Tiger girls' hockey nabs second seed

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team received the No. 2 seed in Division I from the Vermont Principals’ Association on Thursday and will host a quarterfinal playoff game on Wednesday.

The defending Division II champion Tigers (15-5) will entertain No. 7 Rutland (7-11-2) at 7 p.m. The Raiders and Tigers met twice this winter, with MUHS winning by 5-1 and 1-0.

Tiger boys' hockey beats Northfield, 6-2

MIDDLEBURY — The No. 4 Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team won its first-round Division II playoff game on Saturday night, 6-2, over visiting No. 13 Northfield.

The Tigers improved to 13-6-2 and will next host No. 5 U-32 (13-7-1) on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in a quarterfinal. That game will be a rematch of a Feb. 11 contest hosted and won by the Raiders, 5-2. In another first-round game on Saturday, U-32 defeated visiting Brattleboro on Wednesday, 5-4, after falling behind by 3-0.

Panther men's hockey splits with Ephs

 MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s hockey team split a home-and-home series with Williams (14-6-2 and 10-5-1 NESCAC) this past weekend, and the Panthers will enter their final weekend of regular season play with a 9-10-3 record, 6-7-3 in NESCAC play.

Middlebury stands in seventh place and has clinched a NESCAC playoff berth. The Panthers will hope to move up in the standings when they play at second-place Amherst on Friday and at sixth-place Hamilton on Saturday.

Panther women's hockey nails down first place

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team defeated NESCAC foe Williams twice this past weekend to clinch first place in the league, earn the top seed for the upcoming NESCAC tournament, and push its unbeaten streak to 15-0-3.

The 18-2-3 Panthers finished 13-1-2 in NESCAC play, are ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III, and have one game left in their regular season — a visit from No. 2 Plattsburgh this Saturday at 3 p.m.

SWANTON — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team split a pair of road games last week and stands in sixth place in Division II with one game to go. The Vermont Principals’ Association will announce playoff pairings on Thursday.

The 11-6-2 Tigers have a chance to pick up points with a road win on Wednesday, when they visit Northfield (6-12). After last week’s results, they have defeated every team above them in the standings except fifth-place U-32.
