Middlebury housing plan gets a boost

MIDDLEBURY — At their May 13 meeting, the Middlebury selectboard unanimously endorsed two actions that will assist the Addison County Community Trust’s efforts to improve 22 affordable apartments on North Pleasant Street and John Graham Court.

Middlebury drafts surveys to evaluate housing market

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Planning Commission will be circulating two new surveys to better discern, and help solve, the obstacles that young families are finding as they look for housing in the community.

At issue are two, seven-question surveys drafted by the commission’s housing subcommittee. One of the surveys will be distributed to people who have purchased homes in Middlebury within the past year and a half, according to Town Planner Eric Blair.

Vergennes OKs 50-home cluster off West Main Street

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Development Review Board this month approved a 50-lot housing subdivision on a 94-acre parcel that borders West Main Street, Hopkins Road, Otter Creek, and homes and apartments on Hillside Drive.

Eastview opens new inn, greets residents

MIDDLEBURY — Construction teams are putting the final cosmetic touches on the new, 90,000-square-foot inn building that is the centerpiece of the Eastview at Middlebury retirement community off South Street. The inn will officially open to residents on June 1.

Seniors enjoying new city housing: officials point to project as a model

VERGENNES — Larry Carlson was on the waiting list for an apartment in the Vergennes Senior Housing building for more than three years. Once construction began, he checked back every week to see if he would get in. Now a resident of the newly opened facility off Armory Lane, he is thrilled with his experience.

“As soon as the architect first came out, I was over to the offices and signed up. I was here every single week to check and see how the progress was coming,” said Carlson.

2012 looks promising for home-building firm

MIDDLEBURY — Business looks promising for a prominent Middlebury employer, Connor Homes, which specializes in crafting colonial reproduction kit homes at its Route 7 plant that was once the home of Standard Register.

Connor Homes owner Mike Connor said deposits for his company’s high-end homes are running about 50 percent ahead of 2011, leaving him “cautiously optimistic” the trend is ready to turn back upward after several years of recession in the housing market.

Restaurant, condos eyed for site near falls

MIDDLEBURY — Owners of the Edgewater Gallery at 1 Mill St., the former home of the Vermont State Craft Center, want to buy a small sliver of land from the adjacent town-owned Jessica Swift Park in order to expand their enterprise to include a new restaurant and two condominiums.

Cornwall resident George Dorsey of Edgewood Property Holdings, LLC purchased 1 Mill St. from the Frog Hollow Craft Association back on Oct. 1, 2009. Dorsey has substantially upgraded the building, which continues to house an art gallery.

Local real estate market showing mixed signals

ADDISON COUNTY — The good news, according to local appraisers, is that unlike many areas of the nation the bottom has not fallen out of the Addison County real estate market in the past three or four years.

The bad news? Well, just because the county is not as poorly off as say, overbuilt foreclosure centers like Nevada or Florida does not mean the market is booming.

Ferrisburgh appraiser Charlene Stavenow said sales indicate that prices in most segments are no more than holding their own.

Hancock apartments stay affordable

HANCOCK — The Addison County Community Trust (ACCT) will acquire and renovate Hancock’s most prominent affordable housing apartment building, thereby preserving the low-cost rental units for at least the next 20 years.

At issue is the five-unit Mountain View project at 123 Route 125, which for the past 30 years has accommodated low-income tenants under the federal Section 8 housing program. That program pays rental subsidies for tenants earning less than 50 percent of the area median household income, which is currently $35,750 for a family of four.
