ST. ALBANS — More than 200 people packed the Bliss Auditorium in St. Albans last Wednesday night, many of them holding signs expressing their anger over the growing blue-green algae problem in Lake Champlain, to listen to a presentation on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) plan to clean it up.

One of the attendees brought a startling visual: A bright green jar of blue-green algae, which sat at the head table of speakers during the meeting called to lay out the EPA’s Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) target to the public.

ST. ALBANS — Vermont will invest millions of state and local funds in Lake Champlain cleanup efforts over the next few years as part of Vermont’s Clean Water Act passed by the Legislature this session and signed into law by Gov. Peter Shumlin in June.

To restore the quality of Lake Champlain’s waters, Vermont will have to reduce phosphorous loading in the lake by 33.8 percent.

MIDDLEBURY — Peter Hamlin says that while winter in Vermont is for the mountains, the summers are for the lakes. Hamlin has been enjoying Lake Champlain since he was a student at Middlebury College 30-plus years ago when he also worked as a chauffeur at the Basin Harbor Club in Vergennes and often canoed across the lake on the weekends to hike and explore in the Adirondacks.

On Tuesday, June 16, Gov. Peter Shumlin headed to the shores of Lake Champlain, first to Burlington and later to St. Albans, to sign H.35, a piece of legislation that he has called “the most significant clean water bill in the state’s history.”

The legislation will help unlock tens of millions of dollars of federal funds and provide $7.5 million of state funds over the next three years to clean up waters in the Lake Champlain watershed and other bodies of water across the state.

ADDISON — With Vermont Gas having pulled the plug on its Phase II natural gas pipeline plan, attention is now shifting to another project designed to funnel energy through Lake Champlain — although the proposal in question has not drawn the same controversy that the Vermont Gas application generated.

At issue is the New England Clean Power Link, a proposal by TDI New England for a 1,000-megawatt, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line that would stretch south from the Canadian border at Alburgh to Ludlow.

Group questions Vergennes snow dumping methods

VERGENNES — Piles of snow, packed together in rows like moguls, occupy the parking lot of Falls Park on the south bank of the Otter Creek below Vergennes’ majestic falls.

That’s where the city stores excess snow cleared from downtown sidewalks and roadways. When the snow melts, it flows into the Otter Creek and then into Lake Champlain.

Opinion: Change needed in water policies

Posted on January 21, 2015 |
By David Brynn

The time has come to take seriously the cleanup of our streams, rivers and lakes. They are the lifeblood of Vermont and they are the ecological treasures of all Vermonters.

As temperatures continue to warm and the peak flows of storm events increase, the negative impacts of sediment and nutrient deposition will accelerate. That Gov. Shumlin has placed the cleanup on his priority list for his third term is a great step forward.
