UD-3 eyes teacher retirements to help balance its budget

Posted on November 13, 2014 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The potential retirement next year of more than 10 veteran teachers and a projected drop in the need for special education services are among the reasons why officials of the UD-3 school district believe they might be able to hold the 2015-2016 spending increase to below 2 percent.

ADDISON COUNTY — The four local union high school boys’ soccer teams didn’t really make their mark this fall, with only Vergennes winning a postseason contest.

But each squad played a number of competitive contests, especially Coach Kevin Hayes’ 5-8-3 Commodores, who lost seven times by one goal, twice to Division II champion Rice.

Opinion: Exchange Street idea not BMP's

Posted on November 12, 2014 |
By Ben Wilson

I write to correct a potential misunderstanding in the Independent’s Thursday, Nov. 6, article titled “BMP Leader Urges Action on Report.”

The article could be read to imply that the creation of an Exchange Street Improvement District was my idea. To the best of my knowledge the idea was formulated and spearheaded by Brian Carpenter and some other Exchange Street property owners.

BRISTOL — There’s a new dentist in Addison County; or more accurately, an old dentist.

Many residents remember the dental practice Dr. Jim Cossaart owned in Middlebury from 2000 to 2008. After returning to his native Kansas for six years, Cossaart and his wife, Deb, returned to Vermont this summer and last month opened up a new practice in Bristol.

The Cossaarts opened the new office, Bristol Park Dental, at the beginning of October. Jim Cossaart said it’s nice to be back in Vermont.

MIDDLEBURY — Tucked away at the base of a terraced slope overlooking the Otter Creek Falls on the Marble Works property in downtown Middlebury stands a shiny plaque flanked on each side by several large, granite stones.

The plaque reads, “Stay as long as you can, when you must go, take it all with you all of your days.”

RUTLAND – In the end, after two 10-0 teams clashed in Saturday’s Division I football final at Rutland High School, there was no doubt which was better.

No. 1 Middlebury Union High School shut down No. St. Johnsbury’s high-powered attack, rolled up 322 yards of offense to 190 yards for the Hilltoppers, claimed its 22nd straight victory, and, most importantly, earned its second consecutive title by outscoring St. J, 28-7.

BMP leader urges action on report

MIDDLEBURY — Better Middlebury Partnership President Ben Wilson recently gave the Middlebury selectboard an overview of the results of a Future of Retail Study that a consultant performed for the town earlier this year.

At the Oct. 28 selectboard meeting, Wilson urged  town officials and the business community to seize on the report’s results — which showed some gaps in the local retail market — and take steps to make the Middlebury more of a magnet for local shoppers and tourists.

Opinion: Osborne House move impressed

Posted on November 6, 2014 |
By Sheila Khalladeh

I’ve watched with interest the past few weeks as the Osborne House was prepared for its move, unable to believe such a large building (118 tons!) could really be moved down the road. I would have been one of the watchers in the predawn chill had I not had to be at Porter that morning for minor surgery.
