Face Off Against Breast Cancer raised hopes, money

MIDDLEBURY — Organizers of the annual Face Off Against Breast Cancer were happy both with the results of their hockey tournament on the Memorial Sports Center ice on Jan. 24 and 25 and in the event’s success in achieving its larger fundraising goal.

Eleven women’s hockey teams in all competed on that Saturday and Sunday, three “competitive level” and two “novice level” groups on the first day, and a half-dozen “recreational level” squads on Sunday,

Middlebury Police Log: Middlebury Woman cited for alleged theft

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Emily McGrath, 32, of Middlebury for burglary, in connection with the alleged theft of cash from Carol’s Hungry Mind Café on Jan. 19.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Responded to a noise complaint in the Court Street area on Jan. 19.

•  Investigated a trespassing complaint at Greg’s Meat Market on Jan. 19.

Lazarus building: Going, going, gone...

MIDDLEBURY — Demolition of the Lazarus building at 20 Main St. in downtown Middlebury was substantially completed in a single day — Monday, Jan. 19 — and minor site cleanup activities continued on Tuesday and Wednesday, including the installation of temporary perimeter security fencing.

Printer’s Alley was closed to traffic on Monday, but re-opened, as planned, on Tuesday.

Middlebury Police Log: 73-year-old man found dead in parked car

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police investigated a report of an unresponsive man inside of a vehicle parked off Route 7 North on Jan. 13.

Middlebury Regional EMS took the man to Porter Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The man has been identified as Clarence C. Miller, 73, of Morrisville.

Police said there were no signs of foul play, and they believe the death was due to a medical episode.

Survey sheds light on Middlebury housing market

MIDDLEBURY — People looking for homes in and around Middlebury overwhelmingly prefer single-family residences, and many believe there is not a good inventory of their favorite type of housing in Addison County’s shire town.

Those were some of the findings of a recent housing survey by Middlebury Planning Commission of area homebuyers and employees of some of the county’s largest businesses. The commission plans to use the results to help guide future planning efforts relating to neighborhoods and residential development.

Middlebury town officials sharpen budget knives

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials are proposing to use a combination of surplus money, revenue adjustments and spending reductions to trim the proposed fiscal year 2016 municipal budget by $158,742, an amount that would allow the selectboard to achieve its goal of limiting the impact on residents to a 4-cent increase on the local property tax rate.

Middlebury Police Log: Local teen cited for petit larceny

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Deven J. Corse-Terrier, 18, of Middlebury for petit larceny, after he allegedly stole some money from a relative at a Route 7 South residence on Jan. 8.

MIDDLEBURY — Officials planning replacement of Middlebury’s two downtown railroad overpasses said construction is being delayed until next year after new information suggested the project could cost more than twice as much as originally forecast, and could take at least three construction seasons to complete instead of two.

MIDDLEBURY — Organizers of the first annual Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival (MNFF) on Tuesday confirmed they have secured a lead sponsor for the four-day event and they’ve launched a new website that will assist those wanting to enter and/or attend the event, expected to draw upwards of 1,000 people to Addison County’s shire town on Aug. 27-30.
