Middlebury women's soccer splits at Regional

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Middlebury College women’s soccer team won once at an NCAA Division III Regional this past weekend at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before bowing out in Sunday’s final to the host school, 1-0.

The 17th-ranked Panthers, who were hit heavily be graduation after winning an NCAA Regional a year ago, finished their season at 12-4-2.

Panther men's soccer is upset in Coach Saward's final game

CORTLAND, N.Y. — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team fell in a first-round NCAA Division III tournament game on Saturday, 1-0, to Stevens Institute, on a penalty kick in the 88th minute.

The game was the final contest for retiring Middlebury head coach David Saward, who completes his 33-year career at Middlebury with a record of 359-126-59 and a winning percentage of .714.

Middlebury cross country runners net NCAA bids

GORHAM, Maine — After solid performances in an NCAA Division III Regional this past weekend, the Middlebury College men’s and women’s cross country teams have been selected to take part in the 2017 NCAA Division III championship races hosted by Principia College in Elsah, Ill., on Saturday. 

On this past Saturday at a regional hosted by Southern Maine in Gorham, Maine, the Panther men, ranked No. 15, finished third among 55 teams with 124 points, while the 8th-ranked Panther women were fourth among 56 squads with 113.

Panther football falls on final play

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College football team dropped a heartbreaker on Saturday to visiting Williams, which scored two touchdowns in the final 4:31 to erase a 12-point deficit and win, 27-26.

The result left Middlebury and Williams in a four-way tie with Wesleyan and Tufts for second place in NESCAC with 4-1 records. First-place Trinity (5-0) will visit Middlebury on Oct. 28, but first the Panthers must take care of business this weekend at Bates (0-5).

Panther field hockey picking up the pace; offense emerges in three victories

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College field hockey team on Tuesday picked up its third win in seven days, 3-0 over visiting Rensselaer in which the 7-2 Panthers held the Engineers without a shot on goal.

That result followed a 6-1 home victory on Saturday over visiting NESCAC foe Colby and a 6-2 decision on Sept. 27 over visiting Skidmore. The 15 goals in three games followed a stretch in which the Panthers, now ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division III, scored just 12 times in five outings.

Middebury College splits two games in men's soccer

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team split a pair of home games this past weekend. The Panthers, 6-3 overall and 2-3 in NESCAC play, lost to league foe Colby on Saturday and defeated non-league visitor Plymouth State on Saturday. Middlebury will visit Tufts on Saturday.

On this past Saturday Colby (4-3-1, 2-2-1 NESCAC) claimed a 2-0 victory over the Panthers.

Women's soccer picks up wins

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s soccer team picked up three recent wins to improve to 6-2-1, 2-2-1 in NESCAC play. The Panthers will next visit league foe Tufts on Saturday.

On Sept. 27 the Panthers posted a 5-0 non-conference triumph at Keene State. Middlebury took an early lead on Virginia Charman’s shot from outside the penalty area and made it 2-0 midway through the first half when Alissa Huntington netted the rebound of an Amanda Dafonte shot. Three minutes later Clare Robinson converted an assist from Sabrina Glaser.

From Panther guard to Cavaliers general manager

CLEVELAND — A former Middlebury College men’s basketball point guard became LeBron James’ boss last week.

Koby Altman, a 2004 graduate who started 42 games for Coach Jeff Brown’s Panthers in his four-year career, including 17 of 22 games as a senior, was named the general manager of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers on July 24.

2017 NESCAC Baseball Champions — Middlebury College!

It had such a nice ring.

When I left the baseball field at Colby College on Saturday, May 14, I was confident the Panthers had won the NESCAC baseball title. That afternoon, Middlebury had defeated Tufts 5-1, after knocking off Bates the day before to be the only undefeated team in the double elimination NESCAC (New England Small College Athletic Conference) tournament.

Panther softball starts the season 5-3

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Middlebury College softball team opened its season in Clermont, Fla., by winning five of eight games between last Friday and Tuesday.

The Panthers were set to wrap up their Florida trip with two more games on Wednesday before returning north for optimistically scheduled doubleheaders at Castleton on Saturday and at Union on Tuesday.

Middlebury opened with two low-scoring losses on Friday, 3-1 to Plymouth State and 3-0 to Benedictine.
