Pet of the week: Sophie

Sophie image_11.jpg

Hi I’m Sophie! I’m told that I am a very smart, fun and loving addition to the Grace family in Bristol. When my family first acquired me they started to work hard on training me to perform various tasks such as fetching a ball; what they didn’t realize is that I was actually learning how to train them! My human mom Debbie says I’m like a little child since I’ve been known to throw a fit if I don’t get my own way… I’m a big gal so I can literally drop myself on the floor and refuse to move!

Caring for aquarium fish is not hard, but important

Parents eager to instill a sense of responsibility in their children may turn to pets to facilitate such lessons. But dogs or cats may not fit in with everyone’s lifestyle or living arrangements. In such instances, fish may be parents’ best friends.

Learn to prevent Lyme Disease in dogs

Posted on April 30, 2018 |
By Erin Forbes DVM

Vermont Veterinary Medical Association

April is Prevent Lyme Disease in Dogs Month. Most people have heard of Lyme disease and know how prevalent it is in Vermont, but may not know much about it.

Lyme disease is spread through deer tick bites and caused by a bacteria called borrelia burgdorferi. This disease can cause your dog to be lame, lethargic and not want to eat. In more severe cases, it can lead to kidney disease and rarely death. Preventing Lyme disease through vaccines and preventatives is the best way to keep your dog healthy.

Pet of the week: Lava

pet of the week Frankie and Lava1.jpg

Lava was a canine ranger with the National Park Service in Denali NP, Alaska. The NPS uses sled dogs to patrol for poachers, ferry supplies, and transport researches to remote areas in the park. It's the only NP with a working dog team. Lava logged over 10,000 miles in his career--and in every position on the team. Now retired, he still enjoys playing in the snow and pulling our daughter (Frankie, 3) on her sled. Lava is our second Denali dog; before him we had his dad, Tonzona.

Protect your pets: Check your home for poisons

Poisons BW.jpg

March 18-24 is Animal Poison Prevention Week, and veterinarians are spreading the word about some common poisons for our animals large and small (including exotic animals). While many of us believe our homes are safe from toxins that animals would ingest, you might be surprised at what can cause serious illness.

Pet of the week for March 12

Bathsheba hopped into Kellie Meyer’s home and heart in August 2017, when she was just a new baby bunny. Bathsheba enjoys snacking on grass and shamrocks and playing in her play yard outside with Karen, Kellie’s sister. Bathsheba has lots of energy, and likes to run around in circles and hop over everything. She is a very confident bunny. If someone is in her way, she does not hesitate to push that person out of her way with her nose.

Bad pet breath could mean poor health

(StatePoint) — If you’ve ever experienced dry mouth, you know how uncomfortable it can be. Unfortunately, your pet can get dry mouth too, and it can lead to more serious issues down the line and can also be a sign of more serious current health issues.

Dry mouth is a condition where saliva loses its protective benefits and leads to an overgrowth of odor-causing bacteria and plaque accumulation, as well as increases the risk of periodontal disease.

Your pet may be in pain. How can you tell?

Posted on September 18, 2017 |
By Erin Forbes DVM

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month. Pain comes in many forms: arthritis, cancer, post-surgery, acute injuries and chronic injuries. Acute pain is obvious and distressing and hard to miss —think of a broken leg or an injury from falling down the stairs. Chronic pain can be subtle — some may just think their pet is getting old. However, while old age is not a disease, pain is and can be treated.

Specially trained dogs offer invaluable help to their owners

We all love our animals. The wagging tail and whimpering glee that greets you at the end of the day or the affectionate purr while relaxing on the couch can put a smile on any pet owner’s face.

Many pets have a keen ability to sense when their owner is happy or sad, providing an extra lick or gentle gaze during times of need. We turn to them for unconditional love and to help soften the hard days in life.
