Middlebury Police Log: Local woman receives multiple citations

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Tanya Marie Brace, 22, of New Haven for unlawful mischief, trespassing and simple assault, following an alleged incident at a Merchants Row apartment on May 7.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Assisted a drunken woman who had fallen down some stairs at a North Pleasant Street residence on May 7.

•  Responded to a vehicle hitting and killing a deer on Case Street on May 8. Police said the people in the heavily damaged vehicle were not injured.

Bristol Police Log: Bristol man arrested for bail terms violation

BRISTOL — Bristol police on May 11 arrested and lodged a Bristol man for allegedly violating his conditions of release.

Police Chief Kevin Gibbs said Whalen Goucher, 43, was previously arrested for stalking a local woman and had posted $10,000 bail on May 9. Gibbs alleged that Goucher lied on his bail bond application, saying he had no criminal record when he had an extensive record in Massachusetts, including armed robbery.

Police capture thief on lam since 2003

BRISTOL — After the better part of a decade searching for the man who stole a Bristol Police Department cruiser while drunk, then crashed it, police last Thursday captured the man in his brother’s home in Starksboro.

Later that same day, Addison County Superior Court Judge Helen Toor sentenced Carroll Thompson, 60, to four to six years in jail.

Bristol Police Log: Report of many visitors results in drug possession citations

BRISTOL — On May 2, the Bristol Police Department received a report of possible drug activity at a North Street residence. Officers followed up and found there was a high level of traffic going in and out of the apartment.

After obtaining a warrant, police on May 3 went into the dwelling of Winthrop Thompson, 46, and say they found marijuana and a collection of pills. They cited Winthrop and Donald Grace, 50, of Bristol — who the police said was living with Winthrop — with possession of marijuana and a regulated drug.

Bidding adieu to a 'giant'

MIDDLEBURY — They arrived from all corners of the state by the hundreds on Monday, bathing Middlebury College’s white marble Mead Chapel in a sea of green, blue and black.

From constables to reformed lawbreakers to the governor of the state of Vermont, they filled the chapel to honor a man who many described as a “giant” in law enforcement — Addison County Sheriff James Coons, who died on April 16 following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 59.

Alderman refine search for police HQ

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at their April 24 meeting crossed two sites off their list of potential homes for a new city police station.

They will no longer consider a building owned by Alderwoman Ziggy Comeau at the intersection of School and Green streets, or a state-owned building on MacDonough Drive on the eastern edge of the Northlands Job Corps campus.

Vermont State Police Log: Two men cited for heavy equipment thefts

ADDISON COUNTY — On April 13 troopers from the New Haven and Rutland state police barracks investigated the thefts of heavy equipment and tractor batteries from Ploof Excavating and the town of Salisbury on Upper Plains Road in Salisbury and Mountain Meadow Farm on Vail Road in Sudbury. While investigating the incidents, troopers received information resulting in the arrests of Cale Quenneville, 18, of Brandon and Scott Lanpher, 24, of Leicester.

They cited the men into court for three counts of grand larceny and three counts of unlawful mischief.

Middlebury Police Log: Police warn of scammers calling in the county

MIDDLEBURY — Police in Middlebury are warning area residents to be wary of scammers calling this week.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, April 11, the Middlebury Police Department received numerous reports of Addison County residents receiving automated phone calls that said their debit cards were “locked,” according to Middlebury Police Sgt. Jason Covey. In each case the messages prompted the potential victims to enter their account number to “unlock” the debit cards.

Vergennes Police Log: Vergennes police assist with VUHS harassment dispute

VERGENNES — Vergennes police between April 9 and 15 handled a variety of incidents, including a harassment issue at Vergennes Union High School, a verbal domestic dispute, and a bad-check case.

In that week, city police:

•  On April 9 met with and mentored VUHS students having behavioral issues.

•  On April 10 unsuccessfully tried to find a motorist who had driven off from Champlain Farms without paying for about $20 of gas.
