Governor-elect sets his priorities for term

MIDDLEBURY — Ask Gov.-elect Peter Shumlin what’s on his mind as he prepares to take over the reins of state government on Jan. 6, and he’ll tell you about tackling the biggest battles: getting broadband to every last mile in Vermont; getting health care costs under control; figuring out how to pay for the early education and corrections initiatives he proposed during the campaign; and reducing a projected $150 million deficit so he can balance the next state budget.

He’ll also tell you that none of it will be easy.

Oxholm chooses to run again

VERGENNES — Vergennes resident Thelma “Kitty” Oxholm is no stranger to winning elections. She earned four terms on the Vergennes city council in the 1990s, and then two terms as city mayor between 2000 and 2004.

In 2006, Oxholm, a longtime special educator at Vergennes Union High School who then spent a decade coordinating special education services for Addison Northwest Supervisory Union before retiring last year, won one of two Addison-3 district seats in the Vermont House of Representatives, running as a Republican.

Bristol man stresses business in House bid

BRISTOL — Bristol Republican Fred Baser has been tending to his own local business for more than two decades.

With the support of voters, he hopes improve the lot of businesses statewide as a House member representing the Addison-4 district.

“I’d like to do my best to serve the state,” Baser said in an interview on Monday. “I think I could do a good job and have some good ideas.”

Bristol-area races shape up

MIDDLEBURY — With nomination petitions due this week, relatively few candidate petitions had been filed with district town clerks or Addison County Superior Court as the Addison Independent went to press on Friday.

But at least one local Vermont House district was shaping up as a fierce election battleground: Addison-4, the two-seat district that includes Bristol, Starksboro, Monkton and Lincoln.

OVUHS grad seeks to be next Vermont secretary of state

MIDDLEBURY — Forest Dale native Jason Gibbs has moved steadily up the state’s political ladder since graduating from Otter Valley Union High School in 1994.

The past decade saw him serve as Gov. James Douglas’s spokesman for six years before being named commissioner of the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation (FPR) in 2008. After serving an eventful 19-month stint as commissioner, Gibbs now hopes to climb another rung on the political ladder. He is in the midst in his first statewide campaign, competing for the post of Vermont Secretary of State.

Federal stalemate hampers state health care reforms

MIDDLEBURY — While the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant and a tight state budget continue to generate most of the headlines out of the Statehouse, lawmakers continue to work quietly and methodically on another major issue: Health care reform.

Local lawmakers provided an update on further health care reform efforts at Monday’s legislative breakfast at the Middlebury Legion.

Addison town budget proposed

ADDISON — Addison selectmen have proposed a budget for the 2010-2011 fiscal year that has a higher face value, but the major spending increase within it will be supported by a capital fund in the highway budget into which residents have contributed in past years.

Addison selectmen are requesting combined highway and general fund spending of $872,503, up about $21,300 from 2009-2010.

Orwell sees four contested races

ORWELL — Orwell residents are gearing up to decide a number of contested races come Town Meeting Day. Two candidates have come forward for each of four races, including one seat on the selectboard, two seats on the school board and one lister position.

Town meeting will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2, at Orwell Town Hall to be followed by the Orwell School District Meeting. Polls will be open from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m., and town officer elections and the proposed changes to land use regulations will both be decided by Australian ballot.

Middlebury considers smoking ban in parks

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Selectman Craig Bingham is asking his colleagues to support a new ordinance that would prohibit people from smoking in town parks.

The selectboard will spend the coming weeks discussing the proposed new law, with the possibility the seven-member panel could OK the proposal, endorse a new rule barring smoking during public events in municipal parks or drop the matter entirely.

Three vie for Lincoln selectboard

p>LINCOLN — Three candidates are vying for an open seat on the Lincoln selectboard come Town Meeting Day.

The position was formerly held by Donovan Mayo, who died in the fall. Ethan Ready was appointed to serve the remainder of Mayo’s term, but has chosen not to run for reelection.

The three candidates seeking the job are Jim Adams, Elwin Isham and Brian Goodro.
