Posted on September 25, 2014 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Hospital and the Marble Works Pharmacy are teaming up on a new program that will give newly discharged patients free, comprehensive counseling on their medication regimens. The goal is to minimize the chances of patients becoming ill as a result of not fully understanding dosage instructions or being prescribed drugs that might work against each other.

Opinion: Boy's gift of coins to Porter a meaningful donation

Posted on August 4, 2014 |
By Laurie Borden

At Porter Hospital, in late July, a young boy demonstrated a very simple act of kindness. He walked up to a volunteer in the front lobby and handed him a baggie filled with change — $6.19 to be exact — as a donation. He did not leave his name, how he had raised so much, or why he was donating the money. He turned and walked away.

MIDDLEBURY — Building upon a collaboration which has already resulted in the creation of three “home-like” end-of-life rooms for area residents, Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center (HPHRC) and Addison Respite Care Home (ARCH) have agreed to move forward with another community service project — the construction of a new “Family Center” addition at Helen Porter.

More help on the way for opiate addicts, Bristol doctors to serve more Suboxone patients

Posted on July 2, 2014 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center and the Counseling Service of Addison County (CSAC) will join forces to substantially expand the county’s only Suboxone program to help opiate addicts, a move that will allow Bristol Internal Medicine to deliver the much-needed service to 80-90 patients, up from the current 25.

The Porter board approved the expanded Suboxone program last week, and did so even with the prospect of a $200,000 annual budget hit.

Editorial: An irony in the fight for care

Posted on July 2, 2014 |
By Angelo Lynn

Talk isn’t always cheap, especially when it’s the state that backs down on its word. In a recent case with Middlebury-based Porter Hospital, the state, through the Department of Vermont Health Access, led hospital administrators there to believe they would be substantially supported through state funds to help establish a Suboxone treatment center in Addison County — the lone county in the state without a treatment center for opiate addiction.

Smoking cessation program at Porter offers new ways to quit

Posted on July 22, 2013 |
By Luke Whelan

ADDISON COUNTY — Chuck Arel, 68, smoked two packs of cigarettes a day for most of his life after starting when he was 14.

On Nov. 26, 2012, after several failed attempts at quitting, he smoked his last cigarette.

“I knew it wasn’t healthy. I knew for a long time that smoking wasn’t good for anybody,” the Vergennes resident said. “But it’s not an easy habit to quit.”

Arel developed emphysema, and until quitting he had a chronic cough at night.

Community Forum: Health records problems must be solved

Posted on February 25, 2013 |
By Marvin Malek

This week’s writer is Dr. Marvin Malek, MD MPH, who is an internist working at Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin.

The financial problem that occurred recently at Porter Hospital isn’t the first and won’t be the last cost overrun we’ll see in Vermont related to the adoption of electronic health records (EHRs). Unfortunately, Angelo Lynn (Addison Independent, Jan. 10) grossly understates the magnitude of the health information technology (HIT) problem in the health sector, dismissing the Porter case as a mere cost mis-estimation.
