Porter nurses' contract includes pay increases

MIDDLEBURY — Nurses at University of Vermont/Porter Medical Center (PMC) will receive cost-of-living salary adjustments of 2 percent in each of the three years of their new deal, which also establishes a Nursing Practice Council that will help ensure “appropriate staffing levels” and “the highest quality patient and resident care” at the facility.

PMC nurses, board agree on new pact

MIDDLEBURY — The University of Vermont Health Network-Porter Medical Center and its nurses’ union have reached a tentative agreement on a new, three-year contract. Porter officials shared this news with employees in a Tuesday, Sept. 19 email.

Terms of the pact will be publicly released once the nurses’ union has formally ratified the document, according to PMC spokesman Ron Hallman. Members of the Porter Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals (PFNHP) are scheduled to hold a vote on Thursday, Sept. 21.

Porter nurses optimistic about reaching a new contract

MIDDLEBURY — University of Vermont Health Network-Porter Medical Center officials and nurses’ union leaders returned to the bargaining table on Wednesday, Sept. 13, for 11 hours of talks that failed to produce a new pact for PMC’s more than 140 full- and part-time nurses. But negotiators on Thursday were optimistic a new deal would be struck before the nurses’ current, three-year contract expires at the end of this month.

Porter nurses in talks for a new contract: Hospital budget calls for seven new RNs

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center nurses and management are trying to hammer out a new contract that could soon affect a larger staff.

As reported in the Addison Independent on July 20, the proposed fiscal year 2018 PMC budget calls for adding seven new registered nurse positions to the current staff of 145. Porter officials believe a bolstered nursing staff would help the organization shave around $2.5 million in what it is currently spending for more costly travellers.

Porter sends Congress health care plea

BURLINGTON / MIDDLEBURY — After the collapse of the latest effort in the U.S. Senate to repeal and replace existing federal health care policy, leaders of the University of Vermont Health Network, including Porter Medical Center, are calling on Congress to maintain critical funding that provides access to affordable insurance coverage for tens of thousands of vulnerable residents in Vermont and Northern New York.

Porter Medical Center to open new 'Express Care' clinic

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center is preparing to open this month its “Porter Express Care” clinic that will serve people requiring immediate medical services, but who do not require the resources of an emergency department.

Tom Beauregard, PA-C, is one of the healthcare providers who will be working at the new clinic, which is being built into a 1,600-square-foot space within Porter’s Collins Building.

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center CEO Dr. Fred Kniffin has always compared the hospital’s affiliation process with University of Vermont Health Network to a courtship.

There was an initial period of “dating” last year when Porter was considering the possibility of joining UVMHN’s family of five medical institutions in Northern New York and Vermont.

Porter to celebrate UVM affiliation

Although the affiliation became effective in April following a vote at the PMC annual meeting in March, a community launch celebration is planned for May 11 during National Hospital Week.

Porter Medical Center offers new services for chronically ill patients

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center is developing new educational and online services aimed at helping chronically ill patients stay out of the hospital and/or avoid serious surgeries.

The services include a wide range of free workshops and a website, all designed to help people adopt diets and exercise regimens to better live with — or avoid experiencing — persistent ailments such as diabetes, cancer, lupus, heart disease and asthma, or chronic pain caused by serious injury or medical conditions such as fibromyalgia.
