Mount Abe budget trimmed by $75K for third try

By Addison Independent

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School directors are hoping the third try will be the charm for a newly revised 2015-2016 spending plan that Addison Northeast Supervisory Union voters will field on Tuesday, June 9.

The proposed budget of $13,947,738 is $75,000 less than the $14,022,738 spending plan district voters most recently defeated by a 755 to 485 tally on April 14. Mount Abraham serves students in the ANeSU towns of Bristol, New Haven, Monkton, Starksboro and Lincoln.

The board will wait until a May 28 meeting to make final a new spending plan for the June 9 vote, one that will be held on the same day as a third Mount Abraham Union High School budget vote.

Board members on Monday said they hope to adopt a VUHS budget that will lower the projected tax impacts in Addison Northwest Supervisory towns by several cents.

By Zach Despart

BRISTOL — More than 200 Starksboro residents packed the auditorium at Mount Abraham Union High School on Saturday morning for a special meeting to reconsider the budget Robinson Elementary School voters approved in February.

After more than an hour of debate, those residents approved a spending plan that was larger than the figure originally warned for the Feb. 28 annual meeting, but less than the figure that had been approved at that February meeting.

Community Forum: School spending must change

Posted on December 3, 2014 |
By Gov. Peter Shumlin

This week’s writer is Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin.

We recently released an estimate that property taxes used to pay for public school education will increase once again this year to pay for a projected increase in school spending. While this year’s projected property tax increase of around two cents is half of last year’s, it is hardly good news. We all know that rising property taxes to fund education have put an unsustainable burden on Vermonters.

Opinion: School spending must be curbed

It never fails, year after year we hear rumblings from our elected representatives that lament the property tax burden we all face yet, year after year the rumblings sound more like lip service than genuine active concern that results in action.

The boards correctly blame the legislators and vice versa and that is where the problem lies.

VERGENNES — Residents of the five Addison Northwest Supervisory Union towns will be asked in a district-wide May 14 vote to support a five-year, $600,000 loan to put a new roof on the leaky Vergennes Union High School classroom wing and auditorium.

In Vergennes, balloting will coincide with the city council’s request for a $1.45 million bond to build a new North Main Street police station, and school and city officials are looking at holding a joint informational meeting, possibly on May 7.

MIDDLEBURY — A group of around 20 Middlebury residents joined their local school board on Wednesday evening to vote unanimously for 2013-2014 spending plan of $6,418,788 for Mary Hogan Elementary School.

The meeting lasted around one hour, according to ID-4 school board Chairwoman Ruth Hardy.

“There were some good questions and people seemed genuinely supportive” of the budget, Hardy said.

Middlebury to vote Wednesday on $6.4 million school budget

Posted on April 8, 2013 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters on Wednesday, April 10, will meet at Mary Hogan Elementary School to decide a proposed 2013-2014 spending plan of $6,418,788, representing a 4.46-percent increase. The budget reflects, among other things, a growing commitment to science, technology, engineering and math programs.

But thanks in part to a student enrollment that’s expected to grow by 10 next fall (to a total of around 405), the property tax-affecting portion of the budget is expected to rise by only 0.82 percent, according to school administrators.
