Editorial: State demographics signal 'scary' times for rural areas

Posted on July 14, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Here are two seemingly contradictory numbers that represent the nut of Vermont’s economic challenge: In the past four years, Vermont’s workforce has shrunk by 8,700 workers, while the total employed has gone up slightly from 339,700 in 2014 from 338,400 in 2013.”

Now, wait a minute, you might think. How can the workforce be shrinking by that much and we have more total employment over the past two years? And if total employment is up, and unemployment is statistically at rock bottom (3.3 percent), what’s the big worry?

Gov signs jobs bill _8783.JPG

WINOOSKI — According to Gov. Peter Shumlin, Vermont needs more people like Kyle Munderville, 30 years old and employed by the online retailer MyWebGrocer in Winooski. Munderville graduated from Colgate University in 2011 with degrees in psychology and music and, after working for a short while in New York City, she came to Vermont to pursue a higher quality of life and lower costs.

Guest Editorial: Doom and gloom in Vermont

Posted on June 30, 2014 |
By Tom Pelham

Inevitably, violating principles of sustainable spending has both fiscal and political consequences. At its core, sustainable spending requires that growth in government spending reasonably equate to growth in the underlying economy supporting such spending, especially in relatively high tax states like Vermont. In recent years, our state leaders have wandered from these core principles and the consequences, both fiscal and soon political, are now unfolding.

Jessie Raymond: Warm spell melts winter memories

Posted on June 18, 2014 |
By Jessie Raymond

Jessie's column.jpg

Sitting on the back porch with a friend the other day, I mentioned how much I loved Vermont.

“It’s just so beautiful,” I said. “The flowers, the birds, the views. I feel so lucky to live here.”

She snorted and said, “That’s funny, because three months ago you were binge-watching ‘House Hunters International’ and telling me you were seriously considering moving to Costa Rica.”

Um, I don’t think so.

Higher milk prices help dairy farmers play catch-up

Posted on June 16, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

ADDISON COUNTY — Local dairy farmers are riding a wave of high wholesale prices that some say will finally pull them out from the dairy crash of 2009.

“The prices we’re receiving now are much stronger,” said Bob Foster of Foster Brothers Farm in Middlebury.

Foster said much of the surge is due to high overseas demand.

Vermont lawmakers applaud EPA effort to reduce emissions

Posted on June 5, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Environmental Protection Agency, under the direction of President Obama, this week proposed new carbon emissions regulations on power plants across the country.

The new rules would mandate plants to reduce their carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2030, using 2005 emissions levels as the benchmark. This is the first time the federal government has attempted to regulate carbon emissions. According to EPA estimates, the regulations would target some 600 power plants across the nation.

A more vibrant GOP voice would make Vt. stronger

Posted on June 5, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

As the deadline for filing for political office in Vermont nears its June 12 cutoff, the Vermont Republican party is largely missing in action. A gubernatorial candidate is yet to be named. No notable party leaders have stepped to the fore for down-party offices, and while there is talk about working to take legislative seats, there has been little action. By comparison, the Progressive Party’s filing for 21 statewide seats and offices is far more impressive and makes the GOP look weak and disorganized.
