MIDDLEBURY — Art Howard knew at an early age he was going to join the military. It was something that previous generations of his family had done, and he wasn’t going to be the exception to the rule.

Therefore at the age of 17 Howard coaxed his folks into green-lighting his entry into the U.S. Navy. He hadn’t even graduated from Dover (N.H.) High School yet. When he had secured his diploma at age 18, Howard shipped off to basic training with the thought he might further his experience and interest in communications.

MIDDLEBURY— Among the many veterans profiled in the Independent have been ones who landed on D-Day or fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Waltham Army veteran Pam Norton exemplifies a kind of quiet courage, also important in military service, putting duty before all, at one point even before her new family.

“You go where you’ve got to go and do what you’ve got to do,” said Norton.

VERGENNES — When Vergennes native and city resident Ralph “Sonny” Torrey enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1968 at the age of 19 he had a good reason.

“It was because of my father. My father was an infantry soldier in World War II in the Philippines, and he saw a lot of action. He was a very good soldier, a decorated soldier,” Torrey said. “I wanted to do what he did. I wanted to make him proud.”

MIDDLEBURY — Dale Tucker scooped up a tennis ball and sent it hurtling into the teeth of an unseasonably warm wind that was swirling around the new Middlebury dog park last Tuesday.

His beautiful young German shepherd, Abby, dutifully gave chase.

Abby kept one eye on the ball and the other on Tucker, the center of her universe. Her bond to Tucker is being strengthened through a program called Vermont Paws & Boots, which trains service dogs to aid military veterans and first responders who need a constant companion for savings that can be life-saving.

SALISBURY — For 138 years now, the solitary, lustrous marble marker off Salisbury’s Lower Plains Road has been a source of curiosity for generations of passersby.

Who chose eternal sleep at this unlikely spot?

Those intrigued enough to stop for a closer look have been rewarded with a glimpse of the final resting place of Phineas “Riley” Rice, whose patriotism prompted him to drop his shovel on a Vermont farm and pick up a rifle that he would carry onto the blood-soaked fields of Gettysburg, Pa., in July of 1863.

MIDDLEBURY — We should all have a nickname like Nathan Zuses.

The World War II veteran goes by “Zues,” pronounced the same as “Zeus,” the mythical Greek God of the sky, lightning, thunder, law, order and justice.

Seventy years ago, Zues, as he likes to be known, was toting a 50-caliber machine gun through the Ardennes region in Belgium as part of a U.S. Army anti-aircraft unit fighting in the Battle of the Bulge.
