Spring into the Arts to kick off May 30

MIDDLEBURY — Spring Into the Arts, a biannual event, showcases student artwork and performances from public, private, and homeschool settings in the communities of Addison Central School District. Students’ visual artwork will be displayed at the event, as well as in businesses throughout Middlebury. This year the festival will take place on May 30 and June 1 from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. at the Mahaney Center for the Arts, Middlebury College, 72 Porter Field Rd.

MIDDLEBURY — Master Kellie Thomas, owner and head instructor of K.I.C.K.S., is always looking for ways to help empower women through her TaeKwon Do classes and special self-defense workshops. Recently, Thomas decided to look into promoting and supporting other local women business owners.

 Vermont is always so proud of their small businesses and local grown products, but she hadn’t seen much geared specifically towards the many women who run businesses and felt it was something worth spotlighting.

Sheldon to celebrate Vermont children's book authors and illustrators

MIDDLEBURY — This summer the Henry Sheldon Museum presents “Draw Me a Story, Tell Me a Tale,” an exhibit that celebrates the imagination of 17 Vermont children’s book illustrators and authors.

On view June 13-Oct. 15, the show will include original artwork, sketches, and other related materials. Programs and readings will take place during the run of the exhibit.

Brandon man recalls his father in his 1928 Willys Whippet

I was also born in May 1928. Seen here is my foster grandfather Jonas Birchard standing beside his Whippet sedan, which was also a vintage 1928.

There were only 500 Whippet cars manufactured by the Willys company back then. The car was only geared up to do 55 mph. Notice the wooden spokes in the wheels of the tires.

The photo was taken at East Shoreham Railroad Station. I think the tall man beside Jonas Birchard is Gene Platt, the station agent.

Vermont leads and lags in gender parity; report shows women's leadership trends

ADDISON COUNTY — Even a cursory glance shows that women occupy prominent places of leadership in Addison County. Women lead such organizations as Middlebury College, National Bank of Middlebury, the Patrons Cooperative Fire Insurance Company and the United Way. Women lead schools and school boards, run libraries, and chair selectboards and planning commissions.

A strong delegation of women represents the county in Montpelier.
