Vehicle stolen in Bristol on Tuesday is found in New Jersey

BRISTOL — Vermont State Police have charged an Essex man in the theft of a car from a Bristol residence on Tuesday, July 28. Authorities recovered the vehicle on Wednesday, July 29, in New Jersey.

Police have cited Matthew Coppola, 24, who is currently being held in Essex County, N.J., for lack of $30,000 bail, according to police. Coppola will be extradited to Vermont in the future to answer to further charges, police said.

Parks and recreation offering discount park tickets

ADDISON COUNTY — The Vermont Recreation and Parks Association (VRPA) is offering deeply discounted amusement park tickets to the Bromley Mountain Adventure Park in Manchester; ArborTrek Canopy Adventures in Jeffersonville; Great Escape/Splashwater Kingdom in Lake George, N.Y.; and Six Flags New England” in Agawam, Mass. In Addison County, tickets are available at the Middlebury and Bristol recreation department offices during normal business hours.

Leicester bags grant to fight milfoil in lakes

LEICESTER — The town of Leicester has been awarded a $55,960 grant from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to help control invasive species on Lake Dunmore and Fern Lake, located in the towns of Leicester and Salisbury. The control program is coordinated and operated by the Lake Dunmore/Fern Lake Association.

It's a hot one — keep your cool

VERMONT — The forecast for Wednesday says Vermont will be HOT.

During summer’s extreme heat, know how to recognize risk factors, respond to warning signs, and what precautions to take to stay safe.

“Heat illness is a real danger for everyone. Vermonters go to the emergency department for heat illnesses just as often as people in Maryland,” said Lori Cragin, Vermont state epidemiologist for environmental health. “Stay cool, stay hydrated and stay informed.“

Environmental Court buries proposed Bristol pit, voids earlier permits

BRISTOL — A 12-year-long conflict over a proposed gravel pit near downtown Bristol is likely at an end.

Judge Thomas Durkin of the Vermont Superior Court’s Environmental Division last week issued an order nullifying all previous permits and zoning decisions concerning the 26-acre gravel pit near Rounds Road and South Street in Bristol first proposed by Lathrop Limited Partnership in 2003.

Durkin’s July 20 order further stipulates that any new project proposal would be subject to current regulation.

Ann Rivers answered the call in the city and environs with VARS

VERGENNES — “I miss it. I’ll be honest: I miss it,” said Ann Rivers, who devoted more than two decades to serving her community on the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad. “When the sirens go, I miss it.”

Rivers, 66, retired from VARS this past April after 21 years spending countless hours in and out of ambulances and helping people in all kinds of emergency situations.

“But it’s time to travel and spend more time doing fun stuff,” Rivers, 66, said in a recent interview.

Federal grant helps city schools run summer and afterschool programs

VERGENNES — The second year of Vergennes Union High School and Vergennes Union Elementary School summer programs funded by an $830,703 21st Century Learning Centers (21C) Grant is just now winding down, and includes a wide variety of offerings.

VUHS has been running summer and afterschool programs with help from 21C grants since 2009, when the school was first awarded $487,000 to support programming.

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union Middle School language arts teacher Meghan McGrath on Thursday morning gave 10 incoming middle school students their final instructions before they left a Vergennes Union High School classroom to prepare for a zombie apocalypse.

“Grab a snack. Grab a tool,” McGrath said.

Hunters: apply now for antlerless deer permits

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department reminds hunters they can apply for muzzleloader season antlerless deer permits for use in the Dec. 5-13 muzzleloader season.

Hunters can apply on the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department’s website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com). A quick-link to the information and application is provided on the home page. Or, they can apply with a paper application available from license agents.
