Skin care expert makes two big moves

MIDDLEBURY — August is not a time to kick back and relax for Middlebury business owner Jenn Buker. At the beginning of the month, Buker was downsizing and rebranding her skin care business. By mid-month she was moving to Texas.

Her business, formerly Glow Esthetics in the Zeno House on Court Street, has moved to the Star Mill building on Mill Street and opened there as Pro Skin Studio. Buker offers skin care services including facials, body waxing and eyebrow design for men and women.

Addison's Briggs hopes to enter Addison-3 race

ADDISON — Peter Briggs firmly believes that if you see a problem, you should work to become part of the solution.

So when Briggs, 23, noticed a vacant GOP slot in the race for the two Vermont House seats representing Addison-3, the Addison Republican decided to wage a write-in campaign for the Tuesday, Aug. 26, primary in an effort to get onto the Nov. 4 General Election ballot.

Trio readies for two-week canoe trip to battle polio

VERGENNES — On Aug. 23, Vergennes Day, Rob McNamara and two good friends plan to go for a long paddle on Lake Champlain, a two-week long paddle, to be more specific. Starting at the Vergennes falls at noon this Saturday, the three will paddle a kayak and a canoe some 300 miles southward, down Lake Champlain, through the Champlain Canal, and on to the mouth of the Hudson River.

Aug. 27 forum to focus on ANwSU accounting problems

VERGENNES — The Addison Northwest Supervisory Union board has scheduled a forum next week to allow ANwSU residents to learn more and ask questions about the district’s accounting problems and its efforts to correct them.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 6:30 p.m. in the Vergennes Union High School library.

VERGENNES — On Monday Vergennes residents will have a chance to learn more about and weigh in on a topic that has generated debate in the community — a $42,000 toddler playground proposed for a patch of lawn between the city pool and East Street.

The Vergennes City Council scheduled an informational meeting for 6:30 p.m. on Monday in the Vergennes Fire Department basement, an event that will follow a 6 p.m. hearing on a proposed update to the Vergennes City Plan.

“If the ship is headed up for an iceberg, why sign up for the crew?” the erstwhile independent candidate asked, rhetorically, with a smile on Tuesday while discussing her third try at Vermont’s top executive post.

“I think we need a new direction.”

Some states have property rights advocates — why doesn't Vermont?

ADDISON COUNTY — For months, landowners along the Addison-Rutland Natural Gas Project pipeline route have asked state regulators to provide them with legal help to negotiate easements with Vermont Gas Systems.

The Office of the Attorney General does not represent private citizens, and many landowners feel the Department of Public Service has not offered adequate legal support, leaving them with few resources to represent their best interests.

Does algae threaten Lake Champlain drinking water?

VERMONT — For three days early this August Ohio’s fourth-largest city had no drinking water. Toledo’s tap water, supplied by Lake Erie, was contaminated with toxins produced by blue-green algae, forcing 500,000 residents to turn off their taps.
