Quest across the lake honors bridge history

CROWN POINT, N.Y./ADDISON, Vt. Nicholas and Nicola Bell, with their baby Poppy, were the first people to complete a new quest that links Crown Point, N.Y. with Chimney Point, Vt. The British family followed clues on a Quest Map and answered seven riddles to obtain the quest’s treasure: a commemorative coin. The Bells, who were visiting from London, reported, “It was a great deal of fun!”

Castleton opens dorm in Rutland

Steve Costello's nature photos on display at pop-up exhibit

RUTLAND — The beautiful photography of former Addison County resident Steve Costello is going on display at this weekend at Rutland’s Chaffee Art Center in an exhibition titled “Eye on Nature: Photographs by Steve Costello.”

On Friday, Sept. 23, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and again on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., the public is welcome to visit the Chaffee at 16 South Main St. for a pop-up exhibit of Costello’s photography. This is the first time Costello has publically shared his work.

This Saturday at the Bristol Harvest Festival they will unveil the “Bristol Au Naturel” calendar, featuring naked residents posed “discretely” at a number of favorite Bristol locales.

'80s rockers go hillbilly

We all love the '80s right? Why wouldn't you? Wild hair, overstated duds, amazing dance moves and epic guitar riffs. But here in Vermont (ahem, Addison County) we might not be 100 percent '80s rockers at heart (we'll leave that for the students on the hill). Gotta get us some of that finger-pickin', foot-stompin' bluegrass twang before it's a real party.

Get ready, because the best of both worlds are hitting the stage on Friday night at the Marquis in Middlebury. Yes, that's right, an '80s Bluegrass Hillbilly Ball — get excited!

RIPTON — Police say two men lured a third man to a Ripton home on Saturday and beat him with a tire iron and a large wrench before the victim fled into the woods, where he allegedly was shot at.

BRISTOL — “If you could pick anything in the world, what are some things you’d like to learn about?” asks Mount Abraham Union Middle School teacher Jocelyn Foran.

Every last head in Foran’s seventh grade classroom bends over as students start thinking in earnest, chewing on pencils, scratching down ideas and brainstorming.

Police cadets help family in need

PITTSFORD — Sometimes extraordinary things can happen on ordinary days.

Week before last, single dad Rik Hinckley and his teenage daughter, Emma, were having an ordinary day full of obstacles.

Hinckley, 52, was a pipefitter for 22 years before two failed back surgeries sidelined him from work. His back trouble also prevents him from moving large objects.

Local teens win international Lego movie competition

MIDDLEBURY — Sixteen-year-old Jack Nop has always been a huge fan of Lego toys and stop-motion film classics like “Wallace & Gromit” and “James & the Giant Peach.”

He decided to combine his two passions a few years ago under the banner of NopFilms to produce several stop-motion Lego videos that have become a fixture on YouTube. Jack’s older brother, Jake, and friend Peter Dickerson also collaborated on the fun filmmaking — which this week paid some big dividends.
