Sheldon, Nuovo win Vt. House primary in Middlebury

ADDISON COUNTY — Democrats Amy Sheldon and Betty Nuovo will continue their respective bids for Middlebury’s two seats in the Vermont House on Nov. 4, thanks to their performances in Addison County’s lone contested legislative primary on Tuesday.

Brandon residents back town budget on fifth vote

BRANDON — For better or worse, Brandon has a budget.

In this, the last town in Vermont to pass a municipal spending plan, voters approved a budget on the fifth try Tuesday by a vote of 534-472.

But considering the austerity needed for voter approval, it is not exactly a time for celebration. Voters and officials alike are feeling bruised and beaten after five months of financial wrangling, finger pointing and frustration.

Ciderbration draws more than 7,500 to Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Hard Cider officials estimate that 7,500 to 8,000 people turned out for the company’s “Ciderbration” event in Middlebury on Saturday, Aug. 23.

Lake Monsters 'draft' Bristol baseball player

BRISTOL — The Vermont Lake Monsters minor league baseball team in Burlington looked in their own backyard to fill an open roster spot by signing a Bristol native to a one-day contract.

The Class-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics signed catcher Ethan Fritz, who became a free agent after a strong season this spring with the Bristol Eagles.

Not bad for a kid who’s just 11.

George, Poole garner most votes in write-in contest for side judge

ADDISON COUNTY — Lobbying for write-in support on Tuesday were the three candidates for Addison County side judge: Alice George of Middlebury, Mark Smith of Middlebury and Irene Poole of Ripton. No one had filed nomination papers for the county’s two side judge vacancies at the filing deadline in June. So George, Smith and Poole have all decided to lobby for the minimum 50 write-in votes they will need to get on the Nov. 4 ballot.

State to provide independent appraisers in pipeline eminent domain cases

MONTPELIER — Gov. Peter Shumlin on Monday directed the Department of Public Service to provide independent appraisals for landowners entering eminent domain proceedings with Vermont Gas Systems for Phase I of the Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project.

The governor announced the policy changes in replying to a letter written by three Addison County legislators earlier this month, who expressed concerns about the project.

Young Writers Project challenges students to write for publication

VERMONT — The Young Writers Project is gearing up for another year of encouraging young people to write by soliciting work and publishing it online and in newspapers around the state, including the Addison Independent.

YWP is an independent nonprofit that engages students to write, helps them improve and connects them with authentic audiences. It also reaches different audiences through a new digital magazine, The Voice, and partner web sites, vpr.net, vtdigger.org and cowbird.com.

ACSU hires business manager

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union has hired David Boucher to serve as its new business manager. He most recently served as chief financial officer at Rice Memorial High School.

Boucher officially begins his job with the ACSU on Sept. 2. He was one of 20 applicants for the position, according to ACSU Superintendent Peter Burrows. Boucher will replace former Business Manager Laura Nassau, who left this past June to take a similar position with the Chittenden South Supervisory Union.

Ilsley Library asks area teens for input

MIDDLEBURY — Teens and tweens would like a little more room at Middlebury’s Ilsley Public Library.

That’s the recommendation from youngsters age 11 and up who were invited to the Main Street library this past Tuesday to discuss how the library currently serves their needs and how it could do a better job.

City man leads Eagles in raising $25 million for diabetes research
