Small business workshop to be held in Middlebury

Brandon-area voters give strong support to unification

BRANDON — Voters in eight Brandon-area towns on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a proposal to merge six school districts into two under the state’s Act 46 school consolidation law. It was the second consolidation in Vermont since the law was approved last spring.

The Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union, along with the Barstow School District, proposed a new side-by-side school district, which the state Board of Education approved earlier this month.

ANeSU working toward district unity

MONKTON — Residents of the five towns in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union could vote on a plan to unify governance and budgeting across the district’s six schools by Town Meeting Day 2017, or possibly as soon as next November’s elections.

That was the message from a member of the ANeSU Act 46 Study Committee in a report she gave to the Monkton Central School Board this past Thursday evening.

Rep. Betty Nuovo confirms this is her final term in the Legislature

He credited his seatmate, fellow Democrat Betty Nuovo, for helping him — and many other freshly minted public servants — find their way around the Vermont Statehouse.

Middlebury's Ilsley library explores expansion

MIDDLEBURY — Ilsley Public Library trustees will soon hire an architect to size up space needs for the historic downtown Middlebury building en route to framing a capital improvement project that would be financed entirely with private donations.

“We still don’t have a concrete timeline,” Ilsley Public Library board President Maria Graham said of a possible expansion project. “We are trying to be methodical and careful.”

Scholar to explore Shakespeare's influence on the USA

MIDDLEBURY — Columbia University professor James Shapiro will explore the history of Shakespeare in America in a talk at Middlebury College’s Mahaney Center for the Arts Concert Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. His talk, “Shakespeare in America,” is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and is free and open to the public.

Experts to mull future of nuclear power at college symposium

Many seats up for grabs on ANeSU boards

BRISTOL AREA — Sixteen seats on Addison Northeast Supervisory Union school boards come up for election this March, and the deadline for getting your name on the ballot is only a week away.

Residents will be voting on six school board seats in Bristol, five in Monkton, two in Starksboro, two in Lincoln and one in New Haven. In Lincoln and New Haven, all open seats are for those communities’ respective elementary school boards. Open seats in Bristol, Monkton and Starksboro are split among the elementary school boards and the Mount Abraham Union High School Board.
