Vergennes-area towns support one-board school governance plan

VERGENNES — Residents in each of the five communities that make up Addison Northwest Supervisory Union on Tuesday approved by wide margins the plan to unify the district under the governance of one board, effective July 1, 2017.

As of that date, ANwSU will become the Addison Northwest Unified District (ANwUD) and a 12-member board will operate it, with four members each from Vergennes and Ferrisburgh, two from Addison, and one each from Panton and Waltham.

That board will operate the four district schools under one budget.

Seeley, Nuovo and Artim win seats on Middlebury board

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents on Town Meeting Day made resident Heather Seeley the top vote-getter in a five-way race for three seats on their selectboard. They also overwhelmingly agreed to participate in a new, unified Addison Central School District (ACSD) that will include all of the schools in the current Addison Central Supervisory Union.

Seeley garnered 1,234 tallies to win her three-year term. Also making the cut were former selectman Victor Nuovo, with 1,052 votes, followed by current selectboard Vice Chairman Nick Artim, who received 991.

Town Meetings 2016 – See what happened in your municipality in our town-by-town wrap up

Addison County residents came out in fairly good numbers to take part in their annual town and school meetings this week.

Part civic duty, part neighborhood gathering, town meetings and the Australian ballot voting on Tuesday was a time and place where municipal officials could take the pulse of their constituents, and townsperson could talk with townsperson — face to face — about the important issues their communities face.

Despite mild winter, ski area hosts successful carnival

RIPTON — With two inches of rain forecast late last week and rapid swings in temperatures, Mike Hussey faced a challenge getting the cross-country ski racing course at the Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton ready to go for the Middlebury College Winter Carnival. Unfortunately, such challenging conditions for ski areas have been almost the norm this winter.

“It’s hard to do anything with the snow while it’s raining,” said Hussey, the director of Rikert, said on Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf campus in Ripton

County voters endorse Bernie Sanders, John Kasich

ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County residents resoundingly picked Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., over Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary for president, and narrowly selected Ohio Gov. John Kasich over New York businessman Donald Trump in the Republican primary.

Results collected from Addison County polling places showed Kasich came out on top with 1,144 votes, compared to 1,103 for Trump.

Trump visited Burlington earlier this winter, while Kasich came to the Green Mountain State just before Tuesday’s elections.

2016 Addison Town Meeting Wrap Up

ADDISON — Addison residents on Tuesday supported town and elementary school spending and joined other Addison Northwest Supervisory Union towns in backing Addison Northwest Supervisory Union school governance unification.

They also supported several measures to create town reserve funds and gave the selectboard the authority to borrow $50,000 to fund the next phase of developing the community sewer system, an item they approved by Australian ballot on Tuesday.

2016 Brandon Town Meeting Wrap Up

BRANDON — For the second year in a row, Brandon voters threw their support behind the town budget as proposed and all ballot items passed on Town Meeting Day.

The $2,486,822 net municipal spending plan passed, 735-459; that figure represented a spending increase of $51,452, or 2.11 percent, over the current budget. The projected tax bill increase comes to $10.80 per $100,000 of property value. The average home in Brandon is valued at $170,000 and therefore the tax increase would amount to $18.36 for the year.

2016 Bridport Town Meeting Wrap Up

BRIDPORT — Bridport at its town meeting this week agreed to join a unified Addison Central School District (ACSD) that will represent all seven Middlebury-area communities, and passed all of the money items on its warning.

Townspeople also picked Joan Huestis over David Bronson, 202 to 194, in a two-person race for one spot on the selectboard.

2016 Bristol Town Meeting Wrap Up

BRISTOL — In the only upset on the Bristol ballot, challenger Ted Lylis beat incumbent selectboard Chair Brian Fox and challenger Joshua Clark for a three-year term on the selectboard. The final vote was 504 for Lylis, 391 for Fox, and 200 for Clark.

Fox had served on the selectboard since 2013, when he won a race against John Moyers; previously, Fox had served five years on the Mount Abraham Union High School Board.

2016 Cornwall Town Meeting Wrap Up

CORNWALL — Cornwall residents at their town meeting this week passed all of the money items on their warning and endorsed, by a 404-63 margin, forming a new unified Addison Central School District (ACSD) with six other Middlebury area communities (see related story, Page 1A).

Residents also OK’d, by voice vote, the borrowing of up to $250,000 to be used to renovate their town hall. The $250,000 loan being sought to renovate the town hall would be paid back through future appropriations to Cornwall’s Capital Building Fund.
