Hancock, Granville community church to close doors in Feb.

HANCOCK / GRANVILLE — The Community Church of Hancock and Granville will cease operation next month and hold its last regular church service this Sunday. The church shares space with the Hancock Town Hall on Route 100.

Members of the United Church of Christ congregation voted on the closing at their recent annual meeting in Hancock, according to parishioner Roger Comes.

The last regular church service will be Sunday, Jan. 29, at 9:30 a.m. There will also be a closing ceremony with communion on Feb. 19, at 9:30 a.m.

Mount Abe plans for repairs to building: $1 million slated for facility upkeep

BRISTOL — Next month Bristol-area residents will vote on a proposed Mount Abraham Union High School budget that lowers overall spending but adds $1 million earmarked for repairs to the 48-year-old building.

Ferrisburgh board planning to cut treasurer hours

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard is moving toward cutting hours for the position of town treasurer as it prepares its 2017-2018 budget, the latest sign of its discontent with the work of town’s elected incumbent treasurer.

The board also on Jan. 17 discussed with its auditor what he called accounting deficiencies, and changed the town’s credit card policy to give the board, not the treasurer, the authority to issue or cancel town credit cards or make changes on cards being used by cardholders.

Firefighters answered the call: County department members honored for service

Bristol's pen master carves niche

BRISTOL — Keypads on our computers, smart phones or tablets might dominate a lot of our communication these days, but the good old fashioned pen hasn’t gone out of style either. Especially not the hand carved wooden pens made by Jim Cunningham in Bristol.

Early in his woodworking career, Cunningham ran a rustic handmade furniture company and was a member of Vermont WoodNet — a local group of woodcrafters. “WoodNet was a good group to help me get going,” he said.

Vermont hunters had a good year

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department recently released totals for the number of wild game taken in last year's hunting seasos.

Employers deal with drug addicts in the workplace

Middlebury Fire Department takes time to celebrate

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Fire Department and Battell Hose Company held its annual awards dinner on Dec. 10, 2016 at the American Legion Post 27 in Middlebury. The dinner was attended by current, former and life members of the Middlebury Fire Department, as well as members of the board of directors of the Battell Hose Company, and guests.

Chief David Shaw highlighted several of the department’s accomplishments for the year “through the numbers”:
