MIDDLEBURY — Robert Many credits two things for helping him through his service in the Korean War: his faith and his ability to type.

Many grew up in Salisbury and attended elementary school there. He played baseball at Middlebury High School and claims his fastball was so fast he earned the nickname “Fireball,” which he has kept to this day.

“I could have played for the Red Sox but farming nearly killed me,” he said.

FERRISBURGH — American Legion Post 14 Commander Paul Paquin, like most American men who came of age in the 1960s, remembers how he chose to deal with the issue of serving in the Vietnam War.

Paquin, a Sheffield native born in 1947 whose family moved to a New Haven dairy farm in 1958, was working there when the recruiters approached him with the draft looming.

Salute to Veterans: Vets' reaction to war can be very different

Posted on November 10, 2014 |
By Patricia Lewis

“Listen to what vets say … and what they don’t say.”

I have lived with a veteran all my life — first my father, then my husband. Both men were profoundly affected by their military experiences.

My father, Walter G. Eaton, talked constantly of World War II, living the campaigns of Africa, Italy and France over and over again. Almost 60 years ago, when I was seven, I could recite his stories — and right before he died in 1996, I heard him telling his physician the same ones.

BRISTOL — There’s a new dentist in Addison County; or more accurately, an old dentist.

Many residents remember the dental practice Dr. Jim Cossaart owned in Middlebury from 2000 to 2008. After returning to his native Kansas for six years, Cossaart and his wife, Deb, returned to Vermont this summer and last month opened up a new practice in Bristol.

The Cossaarts opened the new office, Bristol Park Dental, at the beginning of October. Jim Cossaart said it’s nice to be back in Vermont.

STARKSBORO — This summer, Stephen Ahern taught Isaiah Szczecienski how to build a skin boat. The two worked all summer — using nearly all donated materials — making plans, bending wood and tying the “skin” to the frame to make a watertight canoe, fit for its maiden voyage on Lake Iroquois. The two presented their completed project to the students and staff of Robinson School at a weekly MARS (Meeting At Robinson School) gathering.

ADDISON/STARKSBORO — Two Addison County towns have found different answers to a challenge posed by revisions the Legislature made to Vermont’s Open Meeting Law this past session, a challenge shared by a number of towns statewide.

Vermont towns have always been required to make available drafts of meeting minutes within five days. The revised law also requires towns with websites to post those draft minutes online in that same timeframe.

SALISBURY — While Bristol is facing pressure from state officials to close its municipal dump as soon as next year and quickly come up with the estimated $1.5 million to do so, Salisbury — home to the only other unlined landfill still operating in Vermont — is on course to keep its facility open for another two decades and has already put away enough savings to cover closure costs.
