Bristol police will dispose of medication dropped of Saturday

BRISTOL — The Bristol Police Department has will hold a Drug Take Back event this Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents of the five-town area — Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro — can drop off their unused or expired medications at the Bristol Police Department at 72 Munsill Ave. at BristolWorks so that they can be properly disposed of.

Hannaford Career Center will host tractor safety course

MIDDLEBURY — The Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center in Middlebury will host its 2016 Tractor Safety Course May 3-19. The course is for youth ages 14-16 who plan to work in a farm setting, but organizers said people of any age would be welcome to take the course.

Led by Phillip Teer, classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6 p.m. starting Tuesday, May 3, at the PAHCC North Campus at 372 Mainelli Road in Middlebury. The course ends with a driving test on Saturday, May 21, rain or shine.

Rotary exchange program offered to French speakers

Porter to host Derby Day fun

MIDDLEBURY — If your upcoming travel plans do not include a visit to the infield at Churchill Downs in Louisville for the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby, then plan to come to Cornwall on Saturday afternoon, May 7, for the annual “Kentucky Derby Day Benefit” sponsored by the Porter Medical Center Auxiliary. The event is open to the general public and all are encouraged to participate in this unique and enjoyable benefit hosted by Sue and Bruce Byers in Cornwall.

Rutland welcomes 100 Syrian refugees

RUTLAND — In a first-in-the-state development, Rutland Mayor Christopher Louras announced Tuesday that the city and greater Rutland area would welcome 100 refugees fleeing war and violence in Syria. The move, Louras said, meshes with Rutland's plan to boost economic development and keeps true to Rutland’s history as a city that welcomes those seeking a new home.

Ferrisburgh nears deal with power line developer

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard on Tuesday approved a $40,000 deal with the firms proposing the Vermont Green Line that calls for those companies to pay for the town’s costs of legal and expert review of the underground power line that will run along town roads on its way to Route 7 and New Haven.

The developers of the $650 million, 400-megawatt VGL, Massachusetts companies Anbaric Transmission and National Grid, will place $40,000 in an escrow account.

Sabukewicz shares life's moments through poetry

MIDDLEBURY — For 15 years, Charles Sabukewicz taught Middlebury Union High School students to write and appreciate good literature.

Now 78 and retired from teaching, Sabukewicz is himself rediscovering the art of writing — specifically poetry — which he is using as a descriptive vehicle to convey the countless interesting memories and observations he has accumulated during an eventful life.

Police issue warning about phony 'IRS' phone calls

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police are warning residents to be vigilant against a phone scam being perpetrated by callers falsely claiming to be Internal Revenue Service representatives looking to obtain personal tax information.

The faux IRS callers, according to Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley, call people randomly and tell them they owe money and they will be sued or arrested if they do not comply.
