ASCU launches effort to to merge governance

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union is kicking off the 2015-2016 academic year with a first-ever strategic plan and the organization of a committee that will help the Middlebury-area school district comply with a new state directive to form a single school board that would have oversight over a single education budget for what would be a consolidated K-12 district.

Back-to-School Shop to end but aid it offers won't

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Back-to-School Shop — as we now know it — will be closing this summer. But families needing low-cost school supplies for their children can take heart in the fact that the United Way of Addison County (UWAC), public school officials and organizers of the original shop are joining forces to make sure the flow of free- and low-cost supplies will not stop for those who require them.

Make way for salamanders; amphibian tunnel sited under road in Monkton

MIDDLEBURY — Franklin Dean-Farrar is taking a stand for the future health of the American office worker.

Well, he’s not actually taking a stand, as opposed to making one, to support laptop computers in a manner that will allow workers the more back-friendly option of typing while standing instead while seated.

Lengyel caps 35 years as sewer, water worker

MIDDLEBURY — When Paul Lengyel was helping build the former Middlebury wastewater treatment plant off Seymour Street more than three decades ago, he never imagined he would someday land a job at a new municipal treatment plant that would eventually replace it.

But that’s just what happened.

And after 35 years tending to Middlebury’s water and sewer systems, Lengyel decided to hang up his wrench and pager and retire this past Friday, Aug. 14.

Vergennes lands major paving, culvert grants

VERGENNES — Vergennes recently received more than $200,000 of good financial news, City Manager Mel Hawley told city council members at their Aug. 18 meeting.

Most of that money came in the form of two grants, Hawley said, one of $144,000 to support paving projects on South Maple Street and Panton Road and one of $45,000 to pay most of the cost of a new culvert on South Maple Street.

'Drive Sober' campaign closes out summer

ADDISON COUNTY — As the 2015 summer winds down, the Addison County Sheriff’s Department along with other state and local law enforcement agencies will be ramping up its enforcement efforts as part of a national crackdown on drunk driving.

The 20-day, high-visibility campaign, “2015 Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” is a partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Vermont Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP) and Vermont State, County, and Local law enforcement agencies to curb impaired driving and save lives.

Slavery history talk at Vt. Folklife Center

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Folklife Center in Middlebury presents “From Life in West Africa, to Enslavement in Virginia, to Freedom in Vermont: an African American Saga,” a multimedia presentation by Dr. Jane Beck, on Thursday, Sept. 10, from 6-8 p.m.

This free event celebrates the publication of Beck’s book “Daisy Turner’s Kin: An African American Family Saga.” Refreshments and informal conversation with the author will be followed by her presentation, discussion and book signing.

SHELBURNE — Shelburne Vineyard’s Fall art exhibit, “Fall’s Call,” will feature the photographs of Lincoln artist Victoria Blewer beginning Tuesday, Sept. 1 and hanging through Nov. 30. An artist’s reception will be held at the Vineyard Tasting Room on Sunday, Sept. 13, from 2-4 p.m., where visitors can meet the artist and enjoy complimentary cheese and crackers. Wine will be available for sale by the glass.

“Fall is my favorite time,” Blewer said, “it seems so simple and so perfect.”
