Memorial Day parades planned in six local communities

ADDISON COUNTY AND BRANDON — Strike up the band, get out your flags and raise a salute for the men and women who served the United States in the military and gave their lives doing so.

This weekend will see Memorial Day parades in six area town.

These festivities serve multiple purposes — they mark the traditional beginning of the summer, set a patriotic mood in the community, and set aside a time where we can remember those who fought and died for his nation.

Memorial Day flower girl tradition spans generations

BRANDON — Every year on the last Monday in May, a group of first-grade girls in white dresses clutch bunches of fresh lilacs in their small hands. They walk single file up Center Street from the Brandon Post Office, smiling and waving to their families and friends. They follow the American Legion Color Guard and the Otter Valley and Neshobe School marching bands, and are joined by the Pittsford and Brandon fire department engines. The small parade with a purpose makes its way to the gazebo in Central Park.

Film festival gets a 'beary' good sponsor

MIDDLEBURY — Organizers of the first-ever Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival (MNFF) have signed up a major new sponsor and have thus far received almost 200 film submissions for a four-day event that’s expected to attract upwards of 1,000 people to Addison County’s shire town for four days this August.

The new sponsor is Vermont Teddy Bear Co., which will, among other things, be providing custom-made VTeddy Award statuettes that will be presented to the winning filmmakers before the curtain comes down on the MNFF on Aug. 30.

Neighbors pan Middlebury airport expansion plan

MIDDLEBURY — More than 80 area residents turned out at the Middlebury State Airport on Tuesday evening to learn more about a proposed runway renovation/expansion project and voice their concerns about the possibility that those upgrades — and others laid out in a state airports master plan — could bring larger planes, heavier air traffic, more noise and possibly lighting to what is now a modest airfield surrounded by a residential area.

Vermont Guard's Maj. Roy to speak at Bristol ceremony

BRISTOL — The guest speaker at this year’s Memorial Day observances in Bristol will be Maj. Jacob Roy, the S3 Operations Officer for the 86th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 86th IBCT (MTN), Vermont Army National Guard.

He will deliver his address on the village green on Monday afternoon at the conclusion of a parade that will leave from Mount Abraham Union High School at 1 p.m. and march down West Street to the green.

Middlebury College graduation is Sunday

MIDDLEBURY — Here come the graduates!

If Middlebury seems a little more crowded than usual this weekend it may have something to do with the 214th Middlebury College Commencement, which will take place Sunday on the campus.

Every year at this time thousands of proud parents and other family and friends come to Addison County to applaud some speeches, watch the pride of the college collect their diplomas and shower the five hundred and something new graduates with their best wishes.

Rep. Welch to address Vergennes commemoration

VERGENNES  — Congressman Peter Welch will be the principal speaker at the annual Vergennes Memorial Day parade and ceremonies this coming Monday.

The theme to this year’s Memorial Day events is “Honor and Remember.” The parade will begin at Vergennes Union High School at 9 a.m. and end at the City Green around 1 p.m. With Mayor Bill Benton and other local, state and national dignitaries in attendance, as well as Vergennes American Legion Post 14 Commander Paul Paquin, Welch will deliver his address.

Bristol Elementary budget revised for revote; residents to decide June 16

BRISTOL — The Bristol Elementary School (BES) board is targeting Tuesday, June 16, for revote on a revised fiscal year 2015-2016 budget proposal that will be roughly $11,000 less than the spending plan local residents last rejected on April 14.

At a Monday meeting, board members are expected to settle on an exact spending amount to warn for that public revote.
