Committee to help Ilsley Library with expansion plans

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday declined a request from Ilsley Public Library directors that the design of the proposed new town office building be revised to reflect 3,000 to 4,000 square feet of additional space for a children’s library.

But selectboard members agreed to study, and take on as a priority, the library’s space needs and didn’t close the door on the possibility that at least some of those needs could be addressed within the new town office project.

Porter nurses union gets OK; talks on contract not yet set

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center nurses have officially unionized under the banner of the Vermont Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals. That confirmation comes in light of the fact that union supporters and Porter administrators have resolved 16 challenged ballots that were cast in the vote held on Nov. 7.

“The hospital and the nurses have come to an agreement on the challenged votes,” Registered Nurse Alice Leo, a union supporter and co-organizer, said on Monday.

DeWitt, Kurth appointed to Mt. Abe board

BRISTOL — The Bristol Elementary School board on Monday filled two vacancies on the Mount Abraham Union High School board.

Members of the local board interviewed the three candidates who submitted letters of interest at the meeting and then appointed Douglas DeWitt and Alicia Kurth, board vice chair Kelly Laliberte said. Joanne Casey was the third applicant.

City residents support council on gas pipeline

VERGENNES — By a 345 to 143 margin Vergennes residents on Tuesday backed the city council’s stance in favor of the Vermont Gas Systems Inc. pipeline extension into Addison County that, if approved, could also serve up to 929 of the 932 properties in Vergennes.

Dance residency gets kids off their feet, moving to the beat

MONKTON — “Do you want to jump higher?” Karen Amirault shouts to the gymnasium full of Monkton Central School third- and fourth-graders.

The students, spread at arms’ length across the space, giggle and nod. Amirault presses play on an iPod hooked up to a set of speakers. The music begins and the students dance in unison, calling out their moves to stay on track.

The rehearsal goes off without a hitch, save for one boy who, despite valiant effort, is forced to pause midway to tie his shoelaces.

Rep. Ralston won't run for re-election

MIDDLEBURY — Rep. Paul Ralston, D-Middlebury, will not run for re-election to a third consecutive term in the Vermont House.

Ralston, 60, confirmed the news in a brief written statement and during an interview with the Addison Independent on Tuesday. He cited increasing professional commitments as a primary reason for his decision to leave the Legislature when his term expires at the end of next year.

Dance choreographer is the cream of the crop

MONKTON — Longtime choreographer Karen Amirault, who is wrapping up a nine-day residency at Monkton Central School this Friday, has been dancing for five decades.

Amirault grew up in Melrose, Mass., and has been a dancer from the age of four, when she began taking lessons in ballet.

“Ballet is like Latin — it’s an incredibly strong base for any kind of dance,” Amirault said.

Bristol Beverage expands, offering more selection

BRISTOL — A local beverage retailer has expanded, just in time for the holiday season. Bristol Discount Beverage and Redemption Center, known as simply Bristol Beverage, has added additional space and added to its stock of beer, wine, hard cider and local foods.

“I’d be kidding if we could grow with just beer and wine sales,” owner Adam LaPerle said. “That’s why we expanded to cider, cheese and meats. We want more local stuff here.”
